1363.0. "Customised map backdrops" by GOONS::CHAPMAN () Tue Aug 20 1991 14:37

The map backdrop files are not DDIF or X11 so ...

is it possible to create customised map backdrops?

	yes, but "it ain't easy".

They are in vector format. In V1.2, it will be much easier.

re: .-1

Hi John:

Could you be a little bit more specific? What does "much easier" mean?
Any idea of effort required to build a map compared to current approach?

Thanks,
Mario

In preparation for Interop, we took an 8.5x11 paper layout of
the show floor. We used the DECscan package to scan it in. We
used DECscan to crop and rotate. We then used DECpaint to
scale and convert from .img to .xbm (maybe we could have used
DECscan, but this worked as well). With the current version, I
editted the map file and put the .xbm file name in. Invokded
DECmcc and the Iconic Map, opened the domain, and there it was.

This is *much* easier to get your backdrops up and in the
window. However, there are a couple of drawbacks. One, unlike
the vector maps, the backdrop is fixed. As you navigate around
within a window, the backdrop stays put - frozen in place.
Two, the backdrop does not show up in the navagation window.
Three, if when you double click to go into another domain, the
bacdrop remains until you specify another backdrop. If you
want it cleared, you must specify a file with a "null" backdrop
	(ie: nothing there).

Despite the above drawback, this is very easy to use and very
	powerful for "fixed" position windows.

What do you mean by editted the map file and put the .xbm file name in?

I did create a file with DECpaint and specify the X11 format but now i
don't know how to include the file name in the map file

    thank you in advance

I believe X11 format backdrops are only in V1.2
