1313.0. "labels on maps and the DNS pathname" by HGOVC::LILLIANTANG () Tue Aug 06 1991 07:26

When registering a Phase IV node, the 'name' specified must be an entry
in the DNS namespace, e.g. .y or .x.y to indicate the full path in the
namespace. It must at least start with a '.'. The label on the map will
be identical, e.g. '.y'. With other entities, such as SNMP or bridge,
the name need not begin with a '.', e.g. 'y' will be accepted, and the
label on the map will have no '.'. In the case of the bridge, it is
assumed to be 'BRIDGE .y', i.e. it will be placed in the root. For the SNMP
entity, it is displayed as 'SNMP y' with the SHOW IDEN command and the
DNS path is not clear, (from DNS$CONTROL , it is found under the directory
.MCC_IP.) Am I missing something here? Please clarify.

From the PHASE IV AM manual, it is clear that a DNS name should be entered,
but the other AMs specifies the name can be any name within 255 chars limit.
Are there any plans to make the labels and naming consistent? It is quite
confusing when the map contains inconsistent labels.

1313.1No dots required in 1.2TOOK::CAREYWed Aug 07 1991 16:5937

Hey, I think we've gone and done something somebody wants!

I just spoke with the Iconic Map PL, and the word is that with DECmcc
V1.2 you won't need to put the dot (.) in front of the DNS name during
registration. That is, the work is already done, so you'll get it for
sure, and you can register better. FCL still requires the dot.
Basically, it is a parsing issue, or "how do you tell a Phase4name from
a Fullname?" The answer is only that you can tell by the dot, so you
needed the dot. The Iconic Map folks have fixed their dialog box to
    expect it.

There is talk about enhancements to the map's display of names, but I
    don't know about that.

Work has also been done to allow a Node4 registration to succeed even
if it isn't already in the DECnet database on the node in question.

    The Register command will allow:

REGISTER NODE4 .fullname SYNONYM nodename ADDRESS nodeaddr

and if you've got the privs you need to modify the phase 4 database,
we'll add the node to the management stations decnet databases, and
    proceed with the registration.

We think that'll make registration feel a lot more friendly.

The SNMP stuff is hidden under a special directory. There was some
strange fizz about how iphosts are named differently or something.
I don't know the details, but the upshot is that things ain't always
    what they look like.

    Enjoy,

1313.2SNMP a special caseBARREL::LEMMONWed Aug 14 1991 13:0612
You aren't missing anything. The SNMP AM currently does not support
the fullname identifier. Because of this there is alot of special casing
throughout the system to work around this. One of the work arounds was
for the register directive to store the internet name entered in the
MCC_IP directory. I believe it also changes the dots in the internet name
to underscores.

So, excluding the SNMP AM, the register directive requires the
entity identifier passed in e_in have a datatype of fullname. It is
stored in DNS in the location specified.
