1297.0. "VAX 4000 Model 300 support for DECmcc SMS" by MQOSWS::N_CARDELLA (Father of Tiger) Tue Jul 30 1991 18:29

    Can anyone explain to me why DECmcc Site Management Station is not
    supported on a VAX 4000 Model 300? The latest SPD says it is not
    supported but I can't for the life of me figure out why?

    My customer has a VAX 4000 Model 300 as a hub of an extended network
    and they need DECmcc SMS badly. Unfortunately, this is an RFP and
    will be price sensitive, so I am trying to configure an inexpensive
    solution to start.

    Another question I have is, "If the customer uses DECmcc Site Management
    Station with a vt terminal, what functionality will he/she not have?
    Do I need to sell DECmcc SMS with a DECwindows station, or can it
    run without it very well?

    Any pointers at all would help in this, as I am not a network expert
    but I need answers to help complete an RFP.

1297.1Here's the answer (again)BSYBEE::EGOLFJohn C. Egolf LKG2-2/T02 x226-7874Tue Jul 30 1991 21:3963
Currently, the DECmcc SMS/EMS products do not support the VAX 4000, as there
is a problem in the EZDRIVER device driver. A (VMS V5.4-2) patch exists for
this problem, as noted in the attached message. This patch has been verified
with ETHERnim and LTM, two of the products which identified this problem.

This patch will be included in VMS V5.4-next, per VMS Engineering.

      BLITZ TITLE: Ethernet Problems on VAX 4000-200
	causing network "bouncing" & "LINE SYNC LOST"

      DATE: Apr 26, 1991

      PROBLEM:
	Ethernet applications running on the VAX 4000-200 system encounter
	problems such as network "bouncing" where the Ethernet cycles on
	and off. Additionally, errors are being reported such as
	"LINE SYNC LOST" followed by "ADJACENCY UP" OPCOM messages.
	This problem was previously reported on the VAX4000-300 in
	TD#000617 and 000624. (NOTE: Both systems use the same onboard
	Ethernet controller chip and Ethernet EZDRIVER)

	VMS Support Engineering has further identified the problem as
	being related to the EZDRIVER.EXE file. The problem occurs when
	multiple control requests are pending and the "CONTROL_PENDING"
	flag fails to clear after the Ethernet controller has finished
	with the setup buffer and resets the transmit timer. The result
	is a looping event by the Ethernet.

      RESOLUTION/WORKAROUND:
	VMS Support Engineering has concluded a fix which clears the
	ECRB$V_EZ_CTL_PND flag if the Ethernet controller has completed
	its operation with the setup buffer. This allows an additional
	setup buffer to be built should another request be pending.
	Additionally, the transmit timer will be disabled when the setup
	buffer completes if it is the only active transmitter.

	The problem has been corrected with a modification of the
	EZDRIVER.EXE file. The new driver EZDRIVER is available from
	either the CSC's or Country Support Groups.  The kit is;

		EZDRIVER$IMAGE02_541.A

	This kit contains a new EZDRIVER and the kitinstal command
	procedure. This kit is for systems running VMS 5.4-2, which
	is the minimum VMS version required for the 4000-200.

      ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:
	This patch is also applicable to VAX 4000-300's upgrading to
	VMS 5.4-2.

1297.2VT is ok, windows are betterBSYBEE::EGOLFJohn C. Egolf LKG2-2/T02 x226-7874Tue Jul 30 1991 21:4515
	Re .0 about VT terminals and Windowing terminals...

	DECmcc SMS is made up of LTM, TSM, ETHERnim, DECelms, and
	DECmcc/BMS (Basic Management System). LTM and ETHERnim require
	a Regis Terminal (LTM requires a color terminal). If you use
	the Iconic Map portion of the DECmcc/BMS system, then yoiu have
	to have a DECwindows terminal/workstation. Note that you can
	perform all DECmcc/BMS functions via a character cell
	terminal/emulator.

	Bottom line is that a color Regis terminal is good enough, but
	you'll loose the real "power" of running all the applications
	at the same time and you won't be able to use the gui
	(graphical user interface) of the BMS system if you're not on a
	windowing terminal or workstation.
1297.3what about BMSJETSAM::WOODCOCKWed Jul 31 1991 11:456
This note mentions SMS/EMS but wouldn't this also apply to BMS only
installations and therefore require the patch? And is this patch
available externally at this time?

any further info appreciated,
brad...
1297.4Is this patch on the net ?VIDOAN::DOANEIS/Network Consulting Group of the 90'sTue Aug 06 1991 14:278

1297.5have you tried...TOOK::CALLANDERJill Callander DTN 226-5316Mon Aug 12 1991 16:176
have you tried contacting your local country support group as mentioned in
the note posted by John? If you have tried to get it and have not been
able to, then someone here can try for you as well. I personally don't have
a 4000 so I don't have a copy of it to post. sorry.
