1215.0. "Security and accunting management?" by NEOV00::MRIVERA (Mario Rivera, EIS Monterrey Mexico) Thu Jul 04 1991 16:08

Hi:

We claim that our products address all management areas defined by OSI.
However me and my customer are concerned with:

- What can mcc/MSU (or other DEC products) do in the OSI management
  areas of security and accounting?
- In the area of security, how can authentication, encryption,
  multilevel password and audit trails be implemented?

Thanks,
Mario

1215.1What security and accounting management standards?TOOK::STRUTTManagement - the one word oxymoronFri Jul 12 1991 13:2312
.0> We claim that our products address all management areas defined by OSI.

    To be precise, we claim that our design allows us to address all
    the management functional areas defined by OSI.

    Doing it is a simple (:-}) matter of implementation.

    Of course, it would help if OSI had defined the management functions
    required to implement security and accounting - as of now they are
    still 'under development' in the standards bodies.

1215.2Where is the raw data?TOOK::MATTHEWSMon Jul 15 1991 19:1617
    In addition to Colin's answer, We need agents which collect accounting
    data with enough reliability for it to be used by an accounting system.
    Customers want accounting data for data similar to what they have
    for telephone calls today. They want to know how much cost is
    associated with each data session and they want it rolled up accross
    the breadth of their multi-vendor/multi-supplier network. Lacking a
    standards based answer as to what resources should contribute to this
    roll up or a vendor ad-hoc answer, the network management systems
    can't do anything useful until the basic data is collected.

    Customers keep wanting accounting because they need this information
    to manage their networks. We would love to give them the applications
    they want because we could make money selling it to them. However,
    without the availability of the raw data, I doubt that we could sell
    enough to cover our development costs.

1215.3CDS has it nowENUF::GASSMANMon Jul 15 1991 21:487
    Concord data systems announced a system called the 'trakker', which can
    provide much of the 'accurate' data you would need to build an
    accounting system. Waiting for standards on this one will mean that
    you will eventually have to follow the defacto - cause I imagine it
    will come first. The technology to 'take a cut at it' is here today!
