1100.0. "How long to install FDA?" by DUCAT2::64544::LICAUSE (Al Licause (338-5661)) Wed Jun 05 1991 16:25

I just copied down both the V1.0 and T1.1 of the FDA and am installing
same on my workstation....VAXstation 3100 w/16MB memory.

I fired off the install of V1.0 yesterday, interactively from the SYSTEM
account and it has been running in excess of 24 hours.....most of the time
spent in the parse table builder.

Can I expect the same installation time from T1.1 or will this take less
time?

By the way, there really isn't much of anything else running on the
system. MON SYSTEM show 100% CPU utilization for the SYSTEM account
and tremendous page faulting.

I'm familiar with the several hour installs for the other modules, but this
is very, very long! Will this be typical of any other modules?

Thanks,
Al

I assume you mean V1.0 of DECmcc and T1.1 of FDA?

Firs tyou should be loading V1.1 of DECmcc (note 3.58), and since you
are loading more than one module you should have said no to the build
parse table question (I am pretty sure that is in the 1.1 installation).
Then only build the tables after putting on FDA.

The page faulting is what is taking the time, on my old 200 I could run
it in a matter of a few hours, on my 3100 it is down to just over an
hour I believe.

Please note that the release notes state to run PTB you just have a page file
larger than your page file quotas, and that the quota should be at least 50K.
Please check what elase you might also have memory resident. If you are page
faulting this bad you will probably NOT successfully finish the instal.

1100.2Increase workingset size for process.NSSG::R_SPENCENets don't fail me now...Wed Jun 05 1991 17:419
My guess is that the USERNAME doesn't have a big enough workingset
size. That would account for the pagefaulting, which would then account
for how long it is taking.

My guess is that both installs refer to the AM he is installing since
installing the director doesn't build new parse tables, they come
    pre-built.

Re:.1

This is V1.1 of DECmcc and the slowness occured with V1.0 of FDA.

This was installed under the SYSTEM account and its default quotas are
WSDEF - 256, WSQUO - 2048, WSEXTENT - 2048....

I'm now installing T1.1 of FDA under my account which has quotas of
WSDEF - 2048, WSQUO - 4096, WSEXTENT - 10000.

It's installing much faster!

Thanks,
Al

Yes, the release notes for the DECmcc BMS kit have info about
required quotas for use of DECmcc. Installing optional MMs uses
DECmcc so the quota requirements apply.
