955.0. "OSI Network Release 1 Compliance?" by DUCAT2::64544::LICAUSE (Al Licause (338-5661)) Thu Apr 25 1991 13:43

I was asked today, by the customer, whether or not MCC is OSI Network
Management Release 1 compliant.

I assume this is yet another spec or agreement?

Can someone either point to a discussion on this subject or indicate just
what this agreement or specification states....and whether it is an agreement
or a spec....

And....whether we are compliant for DECmcc VMS V?.?

thanks,
Al

most likely your customer was referring to the June 1/90 output from
the OSI/Network Management Forum (subset of OSI Management
Specifications solely focused on protocols and applications to permit
mgt sytem to mgt system interaction), affectionately referred to as
    "NMF Release 1 Specifications".

R1 deals with standardized message sets (defining the envelope,
sequence of bits), CMIP protocols, limited set of OSI directives (ie.
get, set, clear, enable, disable, etc.) and the like. Future releases will
go up the value chain and deal with trouble tickets, accounting,
    security, etc.

DEC is, only at a prototype level, taking these recommendations and
where feasible, implement the Conformant Management Enity ( an
interface to allow multivendor task-to-task comm over CMIP link) onto
DECmcc BMS. We have, again under AD guise, shown demo versions to
customers in show circuit (SUPERCOMM, COMNET).

As voting members of the OSI/NMF, we have a number of engineering and
marketing (moi) resources dedicated to fulfilling the NMF goal of
implementing " a definition of a common network management interface
that will allow their (all vendors) products to interoperate or
communicate with one another". End to end mgt is kind of what they're
    striving for.

Our progress against R1 will permit us to exchange alarms,
configuration, and call/transaction data when finalized. delivery TBD.

I have set of overheads which can be used to explain our activities
(delivered at NETU) if you send mail to DELNI::WETMORE.
