833.0. "Advise on Ultrix migration." by POBOX::WALLIN (Jim) Fri Mar 22 1991 15:07

Our client, Ameritech, wishes to purchase EMA on Ultrix platform.
Currently, the Ultrix platform is not available until October
(Version 1.1). They wish to adopt an interim platform in order to
start developing MIB.

Is it the path of least pain for the client to begin this effort
under VMS and then migrate? or under Ultrix/MSU and migrate?

Your advise is very much appreciated.

Thank you in advance,

Ed Jolly - 8,471-5097

Jim Wallin - 8,447-2958

p.s. Client will be using EMA for BBN/X.25.

	Could you give a little more information. What is it that
	Ameritech is planning to develop. You say "to start developing
	MIB". Are they planning on writing an SNMP agent with a
	private extension? Are they writing an access module for the
	management director?

833.2Which way to go?GLDOA::JOLLYFri Mar 22 1991 20:0114
    Michigan Bell Telephone one of the Bell Operating Companies under
    Ameritech has a large X.25 Packet network running under BBN products
    (switchs). BBN is currently writing a MIB to work with the Ultrix
    DECmcc and it should be available sometime in the fall. The account
    would like to make use of the EMA concept and code some of there own
    MIBs for items such as ISDN, Cable pay for View lines, etc. Since they
    can't get the MCC version under Ultrix till fall could they develop
    under either VMS DECmcc now or MSU under Ultrix and then port? Which
    port would be easier?

    Hope that explains it.

    thanks

833.3What does "writing a MIB" mean?CHRISB::BRIENENDECmcc Bridge|Station|SNMP Management.Mon Mar 25 1991 13:4214
RE: .-1

Since I don't have a telephony background, I may be stumbling over terms
that mean something different to you than to me...

What does "writing a MIB" and "coding some of their own MIBs" mean?

Are you referring to SNMP MIB extensions; perhaps keying in existing SNMP MIB
information (e.g., typing in the FDDI MIB)?

Are you referring to coding of an SNMP Agent that implements a vendor
specific MIB?

Are you referring to populating a database with subscriber names?
833.4More info on MIB'sGLDOA::JOLLYTue Mar 26 1991 01:0614
    I basically mean a little of all of the above. From what I gather if
    you buy a MIB supplied by DEC or a third party it can be run under the
    DECmcc umbrella. As an example you can put stratcom modems and
    Vitalink translan as agents. BBN is producing there own MIB to run
    with our DECmcc product. The account likes the concept of EMA and is
    thinking about using our standards for MIB's and writing new ones for
    some of there other networks such as ISDN lines, cable pay for view
    service lines, etc. The issue is the will be up under Ultrix with MCC
    when it's available but in the mean time they can only deal with DECmcc
    under VMS or MSU under Ultrix. Which is easier to migrate to DECmcc
    under Ultrix?

    Hope this clears it up.

833.5Looks like PNMPTAVIS::PERETZSun Apr 07 1991 09:5111
Seems to me that what you are trying to do falls in the category of PNMP
(Public Network Management Platform) developed in Valbonne for use of the
telephone networks.

PNMP will be based on DECmcc on Ultrix. Contact Claude Hary @VBO for more
info.

We in Israel have somewhat similar problem. Our decision was to develop Access
Modules for DECmcc on VMS and later migrate to DECmcc on Ultrix.
