274.0. "Ethernet AM Use Documentation Error (June 29,1990 EFT Upd)" by CUJO::HILL () Wed Aug 22 1990 13:00

While working with Colin Strutt and Tim Moffitt, an error was
discovered in the "Ethernet Access Module Use" Document dated June 29,
1990 (External Field Test Update). The following should be added to
the release notes as well as the new version of the document.

On page 1-12 (Determining a Station's Functions Supported Value), 4th
text line "Use the station's hardware address" should read "Use the
    station's physical address".

A station cannot be accessed via HARDWARE ADDRESS (For example,
08-00-2B-xx-xx-xx) unless the PHYSICAL ADDRESS (normally
AA-00-04-00-xx-xx) if DECnet is running and hardware address is
    displaced by the physical address.

Tim and I verified the previous paragraph. When DECnet was running,
    the command
MCC> SHOW STATION AA-00-04-00-F8-FC ALL CHARACTERISTICS
    succeeded, but the command
MCC> SHOW STATION 08-00-2B-14-9B-5D ALL CHARACTERISTICS
failed with the message "Cannot communicate with target".

After shutting down the target machine, only the HARDWARE address
(08-00-2B-14-9B-5D) could be used to access the target station. In
this case, the first command above failed, but the second command
    succeeded.

    Additional notes:

Like ETHERnim in which a REQID can't be issued to the host node, DECmcc
does not allow you to "SHOW STATION ..." to yourself.

It does not matter whether NCP LINE/CIRCUIT SERVICE is ENABLED or
    DISABLED.

274.1Modification to note 274.0CUJO::HILLWed Aug 22 1990 13:279
I've found my own documentation error.

Better if the third paragraph of note 274.0 reads:

"If DECnet is running, use the PHYSICAL ADDRESS (eg, AA-00-04-00-xx-xx).
If DECnet is not running, use the HARDWARE ADDRESS (eg, 08-00-2B-xx-xx-xx)
     to access the target station."

I've forwarded your comments to the book's author for verification and
then inclusion in the release notes. Thanks!

RE .0, thanks for pointing that out, I'll make sure that we include
    something in the release notes.
