119.0. "DECmcc EMS & VCC?" by OTOU01::GRISHKO (Invisibility...watch for it) Thu May 03 1990 19:48

    Is it possible for a VAXcluster Console System on a VAXstation 3100 to
    simultaneously be a DECmcc Enterprise Management Station (assuming
    sufficient disk and memory)?

    Could parts of it run, for example the NMCC/DECnet Monitor Kernel only?

    Any advice pro or con on trying to run both sets of software on the
    same box, or any relevant plans?

    Last, (and definitely least) am I right in thinking that the VT1000 is
    not appropriate as the DECwindows display device (due to no colour)?

    Much thanks

119.1DECmcc EMS and VCS...DELNI::L_FELICEFri May 04 1990 13:5610
    Currently, the DECmcc SMS and EMS V1.0 kits are licensed such that
    all of the included network management products must be run on the
    same system. The NMCC/DECnet Monitor kernel could therefore not be
    legally installed on another system (no right-to-copy for that UPI).

    I've seen the VCS software accessed from the same display, but they
    were not run on the same system. I don't know what the requirements
    (disk, memory, I/O, ...) would be for that config, but it is possible.

I would like to hear from others about this question of combined use of DECmcc
and VCS. Most of my customers have relatively small data centers. But, I'd
like to show them how they can better manage their total environment. I'd like
to sell them VCS, but they manage only one or two systems. And, I'd like to
sell them DECmcc, but their network is small, and in some cases may only consist
of terminal servers.

So, why am I interested in putting both products onto the same workstation?
Quite simply, to reduce the cost for using the products! Also, to show how
their "system" can be centrally managed by one person with the help of these
tools. In fact, the system manager would probably be using the workstation for
their daily tasks with the ability to easily pop an icon and check things out
or be alerted to a potential problem by an icon changing.
