99.0. "Phase V Access Module ?" by VISA::BEROUD (Strategic Technologies Engineering, VBE) Thu Apr 12 1990 12:06

Hello,

Being in charge of producing Network Management tool upgrades for the Phase V
migration of Easynet ( NETAVL like, NRM... ) and since it seems that we
will have to cope with a situation where no VMS CMIP interface will be
available when the Phase V routers will be used, I would like to know what is
the current plan to make the DECnet phase V Access Module available on a VMS
phase IV node ( even if not supported ) and which functionalities would be
available from it. ( It seems that the current module of EFT 1.0 is limitted in
functionalities and it doesn't allow wildcarding nor registration)

I know the subject is hot at the moment, But I am affraid that an Ultrix
solution wouldn't be acceptable (at least for Europe) due to the resources
which would be needed, in term of equipment and staff training, which have not
been planned nor budgeted.

Any information would be appreciated.

Any information about existing CMIP interface running on DECnet phase IV would
also be welcome...

We can manage a Phase V node from Phase IV right now. (That's how we
test.) The plan is to continue this "feature" into the product. There
are some requirements. The Phase V node must have a Phase IV Name as
a synonym and that synonym must be in the local node database for the
Phase IV node where MCC is running. The Phase V AM will handle the
connection by first attempting to use the name as a Phase IV name in
the connect. If that fails, it will go to DNS and see if it can get
a synonym. If it gets a synonym, it will try to connect using it. If
that fails, the user gets an error message.

We plan to keep this feature for some time, even after VMS supports
Phase V. This will allow the Phase V AM to reside on either a Phase
    IV or Phase V node.

We are working with the people doing migration tools and I don't expect
any runtime conflicts. The person doing CMIP for VMS and the person
doing CMIP for the AM are one and the same so there will not be any
compatibility problems when VMS NCL comes out.

    				Hope this answers your question.

99.2Nice Answer, ThanksVISA::BEROUDStrategic Technologies Engineering, VBEFri Apr 13 1990 07:459
Many Thanks Mike for your promt answer which is very encouraging for
us. I really feel you are doing a great job. I understand from the
NCL specs that wildcarding for nodenames will not be supported. So we
will have to use a node list to be polled from our DECnet Phase IV
local database. This would be acceptable for our transition tools.

	Best Regards.
