78.1DECmcc SMS/EMS Question?DELNI::L_FELICEMon Mar 19 1990 17:1112
    I'm not sure that I understand the question, Rene. Are you
    asking about the DECmcc Management Station products (SMS and
    EMS)?

    If so, each point product, such as ETHERnim will be installed
    as if it were a "follow-on" version. You will be given the
    option to purge the old version of ETHERnim, for example.

    If this is the information that you request, the Installation
    Guide does give you a better idea of exactly what happens.

78.2SMS/EMS ???NSSG::R_SPENCEWed Apr 11 1990 17:404
    A dumb question... What do the "S" and "E" in the SMS and EMS
    Management Stations stand for?

    s/rob
78.3Give me an "S"...CHRISB::BRIENENChristopher J. BrienenWed Apr 11 1990 18:227
    S = Site

    E = Enterprise

    M = Management

    S = System (or Software?)

78.6ems/sms and dir/bmsGOSTE::CALLANDERWed Jan 30 1991 13:5734

    One of the most common points of confusion that I have found is
    in the name "DECmcc" itself. DECmcc refers to a family of products,
    not a single product.

    There are currently a few DECmcc's out there, available as products
    (versus field test versions). These are the:

    	EMS - Enterprise Management System
    	SMS - Site Management System
    	DIR - EMA Directory
    	BMS - EMA Basic Management System

    The EMS and SMS encompass the functionality of the old point products
    that they replaced. Earlier notes in the conference explain these
    in more detail. The DIR and BMS kits (V1.0 available; V1.1 in External
    Field Test) are the EMA, Enterprise Management Architecture, compliant
    management products. The DIR only contains phase4 and phase5
    management, while the BMS kit adds on performance analyzer, bridge,
    station, notification, and alarms to name the major differences.

    As to an introduction to these I don't believe there is anything
    comparing the EMS/SMS and the DIR/BMS offerings, except potentially
    in the Sales Update, but for either these there is information
    available. The EMA compliant products have an introduction manual
    that should help clarify things for you. There is a documentation
    announcment with pointers to the manuals earlier in this conference
    (I believe the keyword to search on is documentation).

    I doubt this answers all of your questions, so please feel free
    to add new questions as they come to mind.

    What about database info, are there any conversion tools ???? or do you
    have to manually re-enter??????

RE: 78.7  Database Conversion Tools.

There are currently utilities (in the V1.0/V1.1 BMS kits) for:

	NCP   -> DECmcc Node4
	RBMS  -> DECmcc Bridge
	ENIM  -> DECmcc Bridge|Station

Does this answer your question?

78.9some more clarification.BONNET::MALAISEAll you need is laugh!Sun Feb 03 1991 14:0319
    Just to make sure that this is clear for everybody :

    DECmcc EMS V2.0 incorporate DECmcc SMS V2.0 that
    incorporate DECmcc BMS V1.0 , that incorporate
    DECmcc Director V1.0 .This is available today .

    DECmcc EMS V2.1 will incorporate DECmcc V2.1 that will
    incorporate DECmcc BMS V1.1 that will incorporate
    DECmcc Director V1.1 .Those versions are right now in EFT.

    So every customer with DECmcc SMS or EMS , have included
    the EMA compliant DECmcc BMS product .

     As mentionned earlier the July's 90 US and European Sales Update
     describe those packages.

    regards .

78.10Thanks but I am still confusedRUTILE::AUNGIERTue Feb 05 1991 23:3314
    I am still confused and I have read the replies many times. I
    understand that there is a basic platform and as I understand it, it is
    the BMS kit. What does the basic kit give me, this is not really clear.

    If I want to replace my current point products like TSM, LTM,
    LTMREPORTS,, ELMS etc what kit(s) do I need.

    I will get there someday but when. The confusion is basically the
    naming convention. For example if the basic kit was calles BMS and the
    add ons were called DECMCCTSM, DECMCCLTM, DECMCCELMS, DECMCCTCPIP,
    DECMCCMISS, etc then it would be so easy for me.

    I have ordered the documentation kit but it will take sometime. I
    will try to find the Sales Update the info was in.
78.11Sales Update on line = VTXBONNET::MALAISEAll you need is laugh!Wed Feb 06 1991 10:0017
    Rene ,

    finding the Slaes update might be easy , as they are under VTX .
    Just go on the Corp. Videotext , choose 18 for Sales Resources
    and the select US sales update (if you are in Europe go to
    the Geneva VTX .).

    To answer to your previous question , what has been set up is
    a software package that will over time replace TSM/LTM/Ethernim/RBMS
    this is DECmcc SMS , and the other package DECmcc EMS will replace
    TSM/LTM/Ethernim/RBMS/NMCC-DECnet Monitor .
    There is no currently one package to replace each point product
    individually .
    I hope that the sales updates articles will help you .
    	Regards .

78.12DECmcc Packaging (not a one-for-one replacement)DELNI::L_FELICEWed Feb 06 1991 21:0013
    Rene,

    Please read the Sales Update articles. I think that this will help
    to clear up some of the confusion on the overall packaging as it is
    today. Currently, the point product functionality has not yet been
    "incorporated" into the EMA-based DECmcc products.

    Some functionality is available today and more will be phased in.

    You might also want to read the DECmcc Management Station Use Guide
    for a brief overview of the products included in SMS and EMS.
