56.0. "DECnet PhaseV AM - register node?" by RDGENG::PRATT () Tue Feb 20 1990 13:26

Can anyone help me ?

I am trying to register a PhaseV router so that I can manage it from MCC.
However I am using a private namespace and I am having problems in registering
the node in DNS.

When I type

MCC> reg node "ncl00"
Node "ncl00"
AT 20-FEB-1990 14:47:11

Registration Successful

All appears to be okay - however it is not in DNS, and the NODE directory is
empty (MCC> dir node *).

What am I doing wrong? - the MCC documentation assumes that the node is already
in the DEC:. namespace and doesn't indicate how to set up the node in a private
namespace. Also how do I tell MCC what address/id the router is at?

Due to datatype restrictions, PhaseV nodes are not supported for the
Configuration directives.

The fact that you are using a private namespace, doesn't matter except
that you would get an Access Control error if you were using the
corporate namespace.

Currently, if you went into your namespace with DNS$CONTROL, you should find
an `nc100' object directly under the root, `cause that is where you said
to put it.

Don't know why DIRECTORY didn't work, we'll check on it. However, at
the current time, MCC can't put the alternate identifiers (addresses)
in, so you can't use MCC to REGISTER a PhaseV node like NCL does.

The PhaseV team is looking at it and will respond.

56.2But it isn't in DNS!!RDGENG::PRATTTue Feb 20 1990 20:0344
Thanks for the info, but I have checked the root directory and there is no
object there (I also used DNS$BROWSER to check that it wasn't hidden elsewhere).

Here is a log of the session...

$ mcc

DECmcc (T0.1.0)

MCC> register node "ncl00"

Node "ncl00"

AT 20-FEB-1990 21:43:38

Registration Successful
MCC> dir node *
MCC>
MCC>
 Exit

$ r sys$system:dns$control

DNS>

DNS> show dir . kn obj
 Object _____ phase5_ch

DNS> exit
$

I don't know if this is of any use to you. Also, if I can't register a PhaseV
node in DNS yet is it possible to manage it from MCC? - if so how?

Cheers

Are you trying to set up an entry for the NCL00 node that we are providing
for testing here in Reading? If so, I might have a workround for you
(depending on what you are trying to do).

I am happy to set up NCL00 so that it maintains the DNA$TOWERS attribute of
the name DEC:.ENG.NAC.WACE.SC.NCL00 (I will need to bring it up to date with
the latest software to be able to do this so it won't happen straight away).
This would mean that you could use that as a FullName to refer to the node.

I don't suppose that that will help as far as MCC is concerned because I
don't think its Phase V AM can initiate connections using that towers
information yet. What attributes of the name *does* MCC use, if any?
