44.0. "Modest proposal to change MCC$DA_xxx interface" by TOOK::SWIST (Jim Swist LKG2-2/T2 DTN 226-7102) Thu Jan 25 1990 12:18

    MCC provides a set of generic DECNET access routines MCC$DA...
    which with just a few interface changes could be made portable
    between VMS and Ultrix.

    The MCC-Ultrix project has as a goal 100% compatibility between
    MM source code between VMS and Ultrix platforms, at least in the
    interfaces to MCC. Use of portable MCC$DA routines will extend
    that compatibility in those MMs that talk to their entities through
    DECNET.

    The interface changes are not extensive, consisting mainly of hiding
    the (VMS) NCB structure and hiding the use of a (VMS) mailbox to
    communicate out-of-band data.

    I would be willing to make the changes if others are willing to go
    along with the associated SRM eco and MM code changes.

    Any comments?

    Jim

    ps: While we're at it, it wouldn't take much to extend the MCC$DA
    interface to include TCP-IP, but perhaps that's taking it a bit too
    far.

44.1sounds good to me, but we're not impacted (yet)TOOK::DITMARSPeteThu Jan 25 1990 13:1915
re: .0

We (notification services team) don't have any code written using the MCC$DA
routines, but we will be writing some. I see no problem with changing the
interface as you describe.

As a prospective user of such functionality, I'd certainly vote for something
along these lines. Were you thinking of MCC$TA_xxx routines that are
(roughly) parallel to the MCC$DA_xxx routines?
