There's an example in attachment. Please also consider the case
where the sources are in different directories and I have to
generate libraries from them. In practice, configurations can
become quite complex.

Running commands similar to

cxx -I. -c tempmain1.cpp
cxx -I. -c tempmain2.cpp
cxx -I. -c routine.cpp
cxx -o tempmain1 tempmain1.o routine.o
cxx -o tempmain2 tempmain2.o

should result in two executables tempmain1 and tempmain2 which generate
output like in the accompanying files.

I can get rid of the warnings by putting changing the #endif statements to
look like this:

#endif	// _temptest2_cpp

But I left them in the way you sent them for now.  When I run the resultant
programs, I get:

% tempmain1
Destroying Temp2 with 1.101
Destroying Temp1 with 1
Destroying Temp1 with 2.817
Destroying Temp1 with 2
Destroying Temp2 with 3.14
Destroying Temp2 with 3

% tempmain2
Destroying Temp2 with 3.14

Which matches the contents of your "tempmain1.output" and "tempmain2.output"
files.

However, from this I can't see anything wrong.  In other words the output
you are seeing is exactly what I expect, given the source code.... I don't
understand how this relates to your original question.  Could you provide
a bit more info on what you expect/want to see happening as opposed to what
actually is happening?

For information, I was using Digital Unix 3.2c and DEC C++ V5.5-004

The comments should indeed be in there. You probably did not receive
my first mail about this problem. The original problem I had was
that I have a large tree with lots of libraries and executables
that have to be generated, and that I need to do some configuration
management on that. This includes minimizing the possibility
of instantiation repository corruption due to incorrect
compilations, in order to make executables as independent as
possible.

I want to have

* No duplicate defined warnings, so I have to use an instantiation
   repository.
* No "symbol undefined" messages at link time, assuming all libraries
   compiled correctly, and even in the presence of a few other
   unused libraries/executables that did not compile correctly.
   Especially this requirement seems to be a problem, but I managed
   to alleviate this problem by having a repository for each library
   or executable that creates instantiations. I would specifically
   like to know whether the link phase is able to pick only the
   object files that it needs from each repository, and what happens
   when multiple instantiations are available in different repositories.
* Detecting incorrect instantiations as early as possible. For this
   I have to use the -Hf flag instead of -c.
* Sources can be located in different directories. Up till now I
   have solved this with the -ptr option during both compile and
   link time.

My purpose with the example was to give a representative sample
that explains what my problem is.

Yes, I have a copy of the original mail, but I couldn't (and I still can't)
quite see how that relates to what you sent me...

I don't think your example shows this

Can you give me the files/makefiles/whatever necessary to show the problem
you're having?  I am sure that you do have a problem, but the best way for me
to be able to investigate that is to have the means of making the problem
happen here.  The files you sent don't seem to exhibit any of the problems you
are mentioning.
