Thought I'd piggyback on this topic. Are we ready for our own web site?

    http://pces04.ako.dec.com/schat

Here's one I just created and I'll host it for a little while. I think
initially, directions and maps will be the most useful part of this
site. It should also make it easier to see what is up ahead. I'll
particularly need help with this bit to keep it up-to-date.

Comments, contributions, etc. are welcome, unless you don't like it in
which case you can... oh nevermind. >:-)

Well, I do have the pictures from Sat night!! ;-)

Hey Bill! Cool!!

I even get my own box on the site (well, 2 actually)!!! ;-) (Junior Actor-
singers show info is in 26.9. I goofed a little...the title is actually "I

    Just FYI. I'll be off-line for about a week. I don't expect
any updates will be done to the web site during that period.

New feature, since I'm here twiddling my thumbs waiting for someone
    else to finish their piece...

Post your own notices on the web site. It is a slight hack, but that's
me. ;-) See the bulletted items at the top of the web site.

    NOTES:

    - the poster's IP address becomes part of the notice

    - be careful with the descriptions, since these descriptions become
    file titles (done so that browsing files by title will be intuitive);
    don't punctuate your titles

    - you won't be able to delete notices (email me if necessary)

    - because of the second item above, you will not be able to create
another notice with the same title as one already there

Have fun, but please be on your best behavior. I'll shut this down if
    the site is abused.

    Yours,

Hmmm, as SLAB (.-1) says, no password is necessary. I can't imagine
what could be causing you to get a password prompt. By the way, I
haven't received your email yet. Did you use Exchange mail? It may

I've been thinking of putting in a who's who section on the web page.
Some read-only people may then feel more comfortable to participate.

Can I presume that whatever's been posted by people in the introduction
topic is fair game? I'd like to do this with everyone's blessing of
course, so if you would like to contribute a differently composed
introduction for posting on the web, please email me.

I'll hold off a couple of days to give people a chance to voice their
    opinions.

Yeah s'ok by me too, but if you pull intros from the intro note some of them
(like mine) play off of others so it doesn't make much sense (or sounds pretty
strange) out of context. How bout if people send Bill what they want to use,
whether it be the intro in note 10 or something else?

Thanks for the quick thoughts thus far. I would probably put the info
    into a more uniform arrangement.

What type of information might be relevant?
    - Name
    - Work Location?
    - marital status?
    - age?
    - sex? (and I don't mean yes/no!)
    - what else?

I often lose sight of the fact that this conference came out of the
SINGLES one. This feels more like a FRIENDS conference so I don't
usually think about the "stats" that one would usually find in singles
    ads.

Clearly, many points of information should be optional.

    re: a few back
re: who we are vs. who they (read-only) are

True, but I can see their viewpoint that many in this conference are
prolific writers with only very brief introductions because guess what,
    "everybody" already knows them.

30.35DANGER::ARRIGHIand miles to go before I sleepThu Apr 17 1997 20:303
You sure about the "uniform arrangement". You don't mean at the
exclusion of the "free-form" stuff, do you? It would kinda hide the
    personalities.

Anybody that has access to this conference also has access to
an internal web site. So it's rather silly to start squawking
about privacy issues, don't you think?

Forcing someone to get premission to mimic a topic in this conf-
erence into a parallel web site would be like forcing everyone
to give explicit permission to read these entries in the first
    	place, even in here.

That said, I give you permission to mimic anything I've said in

Well, I have to side with Bruce. I didn't "intro" for a while
myself. Kind of didn't bother. I'd see something and just respond.
Eventually I went back and intro'd, but I guess I don't see it as
    a "must do" thing.

But then, I'm kind of relaxed about most things

I just checked the temp site; very innocuous.

Gee, it actually puts everybody in a box!
I tend to knee-jerk against anything that regimented,
but it's your site; do what you want to do...

Just what problem is this thing solving?

Sorry to be so negative; but as I said above, that's my personal bias.
I think I'll drop out of this discussion...

Actually, this is a company-confidential notesfile like all the rest of
them on this side of the firewall.

    Now where's my pillow?
30.81TARKIN::LINBill LinTue Apr 22 1997 11:208
There have been some valid, though paranoid, views voiced both on and
off line. Balancing the value added against the negatives is the key.
Right now, I can't make a strong enough case for the value added by
having a "cast of characters." People just have to READ this
conference to get a feel for who's who. This can change but I won't be
    championing the cause.

This is a revision of 30.2 which I will delete.

I'm putting together a new machine for myself and I'm migrating the
singles chat web site there. For a while, I will maintain both
locations but will eventually turn off the original one.

    Here's the new address:

    http://ws1001.ako.dec.com/chat

That's One Thousand and One in the address.

    [remainder from original note]

I think initially, directions and maps will be the most useful part of
this site. It should also make it easier to see what is up ahead.
I'll particularly need help with this bit to keep it up-to-date.

Comments, contributions, etc. are welcome, unless you don't like it in
which case you can... oh nevermind. >:-)

Thanks for the appreciation, but it's really no trouble at all.
My machines will always have a web server running and the coding
part is kept simple so anybody like me can easily do it. ;-)
