42.0. "Holding Multiple Jobs..." by DANGER::ASKETH (Beware of Greeks bearing gifts...) Fri Feb 07 1997 15:39

Saw an interesting article in the paper a few weeks ago about people holding
multiple jobs to make ends meet. Unmarried women had the highest percentages.
The most common reason for working 2 jobs was purely to make ends meet. Other
reasons were enjoying the work, to pay off debt, to save for future, for the
experience/building a business, to help a friend (I want a friend like that!!
;-) ), for extra money and to buy a particular item. I know this topic has come
up in here before so thought some folks might be interested...Here are the
stats based on marital status...

Of 14,403,000 single working women, 1,040,000 have multiple jobs (7.2%)
Of 32,406,000 married working women, 1,775,000 have multiple jobs (5.5%)
Of 11,691,000 widowed, divorced or separated working women, 825,000 have
multiple jobs (7.1%)

Of 18,055,000 single working men, 1,040,000 have multiple jobs (5.8%)
Of 42,417,000 married working men, 2,696,000 have multiple jobs (6.4%)
Of 7,735,000 widowed, divorced or separated working men, 456,000 have multiple
jobs (5.9%)

The numbers are 1996 national averages taken for the U.S. Bureau of Labor
Statistics, January 1997.

You know I've thought about that more than once, but instead I sold
    everything that wasn't tied down...

Well, I must say that even though I got screwed financially in my divorce, I am
very grateful that I came out of it with enough to afford my new house! Could
have been worse...

It was certainly a glorious day when I had paid off the debt from the marriage
and made my last payment to my lawyer!

    re 42.4

ahh yes.. roomies... if you can find a good one (I found the best!),
it's a great thing. If things hadn't worked out with him I was going to
give up on shared places altogether and live in a rathole OR get
    another job.

    :-)

Every now and then he and I remind each other how good things worked
out and the plan is still in motion! A while ago, he and I determined
to buy a big house or both sides of a duplex, get married (to other
people :-) - you have *no* idea how many marriage jokes we get), and
live happily ever after expecially since our wives hopefully will be
    really good friends as well.

It's a lot of "ifs" but a dream shared is oft a dream realized!

Say hi to your roomie for me... grin

I have a sorta pseudo roomate and work a 2nd job. I want to
pay off credit and debt. Still paying off the loans I needed to pay my
%^$))@# lawyer for the divorce.. CS being very hight due to 3 kids
makes paying down debt doubly hard. If I can't realize my dream I'd
love to go halves on an affordable duplex.
