Ayr, 15;00 hrs 10th Feb '97. This may be the last time you hear from me!!

The office here is one of those bolt together in 2 hours port-a-cabin affairs.
Currently the roof is trying very hard to detach itself and fly away in gale
force wind. It is difficult to hear other people on the phone due to the
sleet/hail crashing against the window and due to being held up behind three
separate JCBs induced tailbacks this morning I was late and had to park at
least 100 yards from the plant.

The end of the world is nigh!

Rgds, Steve.

Mind you, it rained this morning, causing the sheep-like moron
drivers to bang into each other repeatedly down the freeway and
costing me two hours and fifteen minutes of my life for what is
normally a one hour and ten minute drive.

S'funny how those drivers who overtake on the remains of the
diminishing inside lane after the others have merged politely,
are also the drivers without their lights on despite conditions.

I was almost home last night when the oil pressure lamp flickered as I
went round a tight corner. Naturally by the time I actually got home I
forgot to put some oil in.

It was blowing a gale last night and as I lay awake listening to the
plastic cover on the BBQ blow about in the wind I suddenly remembered.

I could not be bothered getting up at 01:30 to either deal with the
plastic cover or the oil so I put a pair of earplugs in and fell
    asleep.

This morning I got up, took the earplugs out and remembered to put oil
in the car. The one thing that I could not find was the funnel. After
inquiring of Harry I discovered that he had been using it to fill the
lawnmower and it was in the garden shed.

I went out the kitchen door torch in hand and eventually came back in
    without the funnel.

"I'm sure it was in the shed." said Harry.

"What shed?" I asked. "There is a pile of scrap metal out there."

Say so tonight's task will be, rescuing the contents and storing them
    somewhere else.

Well at least I got the oil in the car engine using a bit of cardboard
    as a funnel.

When Marie moved into Bannockburn her garden shed was just beside the house.
It was empty, as she had just moved in and had no garden tools yet.

The following day, the shed had migrated to the back of the garden.

On Sunday evening I stood alone on the beach in the face of a
raging gale. All the other fishing folks had buggered off when
the rains started, but I'd spent nearly three dollars on my
packet of prawns and I wasn't going to eat them myself. With
the angry dark green sea first sucking at my legs as if it wanted
to pull me in, then throwing waves over my head as if helpfully
putting the fire out, I fished on regardless.

Caught only a few Bream initially - mainly due to not being able
to hold the fishing rod still enough to feel bites.

Eventually, I was presented with a sunny interval, a reduction
in the size of the waves and thirty or so more Bream, Yellow Fin
and a couple of Flatheads. I let them all go with a warning not
    to be so gullable again.

The temperature briefly went down to 20C during the storm.

Do that at Skegness, even in the summer, and see what happens.

  Hobbs,

If I ever bump into you I'll knock your bleeding block off!! I too
spent some of yesterday standing in the teeth of gale but the temp was
not much above freezing with a wind chill of minus several squillion.
I managed to get three rhubarb crowns planted, moved a small lilac
tree and half prepared an onion bed before I finally said sod it and
retreated to the house. Twice previously I had to nip indoors as
heavy showers of hail stones sweep across. It took a good hour and
most of a large pot of coffee to stop me shivering. It was the first
time I've ever known wind to go straight though a Barber jacket.

The afternoon was supposed to be taking up outside fitting a new
canvas to our folding camper but instead was spent inside staring out
of the window watching dustbins, cats, dogs, and small children flying
past in the wind. By the end of yesterday the whole family where
  climbing the walls with boredom!

Sometimes I hate living on the Scottish coast. For about three weeks
now the wind has howled almost non-stop, and by the end of yesterday I
  was howling pretty well myself.

  Rgds, Steve.

Winter is setting little steel traps for us, too.

Yesterday evening, as darkness began to fall around 18:00 (We
just put the clocks back, at last), I found that as I sat t-shirted
and in shorts, fishing on the wharf my hands became slightly chilly
in the southerly (Those are cold for us - northerlies are warm)

We don't have heating in the house. Nor air conditioning (rental
house). Have to get a couple of doonas in for the winter evenings.
Apparently, it gets down to single figures (C) at night.

Still, with any luck my application for full residency will fail

     Wierd weather here.

We had 29C at the weekend and 16C ever since. Apparently, the wind
    direction is the culprit.

I've become so un-used to the winter now I've missed it for a year,
that I had to wear, instead of the armless T-shirt I'm used to, a
T-shirt with short sleeves this morning to the gym!

Imagine what it'll be like in winter time.

Cooling rapidly here in Australia. Big fluctuations in daily temp
apparently due to direction of the wind.

Cool enough at night to require sheets on the bed and I've put the
electric fans away for the winter.

Have to get some duvets for the kids shortly.

Can't wait to see how cool it'll get!

It never gets very cold here, that is, if you're comparing against
European cold. The daytime temps usually are very pleasant throughout winter
with a drop overnight. I think around 6 degrees is coldest average for
Sydney, although on rare ocassions it can be lower. Another good thing
is that winter is the dry season here. Am I pissing you off Denise? :-)

More likely to be the normal course of events. Weather appears
to be cyclic with warming and cooling averages over hundreds of
years, according to some stuff I've read ont he subject.

Trouble is that we have such short term records, it is hard to
understand the weather on a large scale.

Nope. Infact this weekend I went camping in the Lake District and on
Sunday night it was so windy and it rained so hard, out tent blew down.

Fortunatly we were getting pithed in the pub at the time, but when we
