463.0. "OpenVMS User license is NOT enforced?" by VNASWS::WILFRIED (Wilfried Bergmann, Austria) Mon Apr 14 1997 13:14

On OpenVMS 6.2 Alpha I have only two OpenVMS license:

	1) OPENVMS-ALPHA
	2) OPENVMS-ALPHA-ADL (supposed to be a 1 user license; UNITS=100)

Problems:
	1) I logged in on the workstation as SYSTEM
	2) I logged in via DECnet from 3 other remote nodes, using 3
	   different user names
	AND
		all 4 log-ins succeeded?

Questions:
	1) is the OPENVMS-ALPHA-ADL really a user-license?
	2) if YES, then why am I allowed to log in with other user names?
	3) does OpenVMS 6.2 _not_ enforce user licenses?

Thanks and regards,
		Wilfried

is this a standalone system or within a cluster?

in a cluster those OPENVMS-ALPHA-ADL licenses get accumulated.

LMF is a management tool, not an enforcement tool. Just because LMF
allows something does not indicate that the action is valid under the
   licensing policies...

Please post a SHOW LICENSE *OPENVMS*/FULL.

Since the OPENVMS-ALPHA license has 0 units, it will allow unlimited logins.
$ SHOW LICENSE/USAGE/FULL will tell you it is unlimited.

463.6re .5: unlimited base-license => you don't need a user license for OpenVMS?VNASWS::WILFRIEDWilfried Bergmann, AustriaTue Apr 15 1997 12:348
If I understand .5 correctly, the following must be true:

If the OPENVMS-ALPHA base license is an unlimited license, you
don't need any OPENVMS-USER license at all.

Correct?

Using $ license modify <something>/units = 0 you can turn any license
to an unlimited license. Then you wouldn't need extra units for this
license at all. Until digital will use its license enforcment tool
commonly known as attorney at law ;-)

More earnest: LICENSE is small piece of paper you get with your
software. LICENSE PAK (aka Product Authorization Key) is data
you can see (partially) when you enter $ show license. And LICENSE
UTILITY is the software tool that you can use to manipulate licenses.

(Sorry, there are LICENSE DATABASE, LICENSE SYSTEM SERVICES, LICENSE
LOGICAL NAME TABLE etc. all together (with LICENSE UTILITY) known as
     the LICENSE FACILITY)

Also, that OPENVMS-ALPHA is an Internal Pak. You can tell because there
is a value in the PRODUCT RELEASE DATE field. This license will need to
be replaced when upgrading to VMS 7.1

If that's true, there is a bug in LMF I don't know about. If you specify
/units=0 in a modify command, LMF will clear the modified units field and
return the PAK to it's orginial units value.

Perhaps you meant to say license modify <something>/units=big_number so that it
is essentially, but not exactly, an unlimited license.
