701.0. "< OVMS 7.0 with DEC3000/600 >" by HGOM30::THANHSON () Fri Jun 06 1997 07:57

    Hello,

       I have a problem happened with OVMS v7.0 installation on
    DEC3000/600.

       The installation seems to be OK, it coppied files ... But when the
    system reboots after copying files, it hangs at the moment right before
    "Username" comes up.

       I have tried to boot the system some more times, but it fails at the
    same place.

    If anyone coppied this problem before ?

    Any prompt suggestion is appreciated.

    Thanks in advance,

    Son.

701.1Various Suggestions...XDELTA::HOFFMANSteve, OpenVMS EngineeringFri Jun 06 1997 13:3275
    What is the system configuration of the DEC 3000 model 600, how
    much memory is installed, is the system PALcode suitable for V7.0
    or later, and is the firmware in the disks suitable for V7.0 and
    later? (This should all be covered in the upgrade manual...)

    --

    Boot the CD-ROM, exit to DCL, mount the target system disk, and see
    if there are any problems visible in the authorization database using
    the AUTHORIZE tool against the SYSUAF.DAT on the system disk. Use
    a text editor to clean the "cruft" out of the parameters file on the
    system disk -- in ddcu:[SYSn.SYSEXE]MODPARAMS.DAT, where SYSn is the
    system root on the target disk.

    Be aware that SYS$SYSTEM and similar logical names will point to the
    CD-ROM system root, not to the "real" system disk, when booted off
    the CD-ROM.

    --

    It would appear there is a problem accessing the system authorization
    database, or something else "odd" during LOGINOUT, or DECwindows is
    falling over for some reason. (You have not indicated if the hang
    is at the DECwindows login, or at a serial-terminal login....)

    Boot conversationally, then enter the following SYSBOOT commands:

	SYSBOOT> SET STARTUP_P1 "MIN"
	SYSBOOT> SET WRITESYSPARAMS 0
	SYSBOOT> CONTINUE

    then try the login.

    If the login fails, reboot conversationally and use the following
    SYSBOOT commands:

	SYSBOOT> SET/STARTUP=OPA0:
	SYSBOOT> SET WRITESYSPARAMS 0
	SYSBOOT> CONTINUE

    Then you'll (hopefully) get a "$" prompt. Issue the following
    commands:

	$ SET NOON
	$ @SYS$UPDATE:AUTOGEN GETDATA SHUTDOWN NOFEEDBACK

    As part of the AUTOGEN, consider cleaning any cruft out of the
    SYS$SYSTEM:MODPARAMS.DAT file. Then, after the shutdown finishes,
    reboot conversationally, and issue the following commands:

	$ SET NOON
	$ SPAWN
	$ @SYS$SYSTEM:STARTUP.COM

    When all this stuff completes, you should (still) be at the
    $ prompt, or you should be able to get at it. Now run AUTHORIZE
    to check the status of the system authorization database.

    I'd go direct to OpenVMS Alpha V7.1, if I needed any V7.x features.

    Is this on a console serial line, or is this under DECwindows?
    If DECwindows, which version, and do you have the DECwindows MUP
    loaded?
