154.0. "GUI interface to VAXmail?" by BIGCHZ::EZZELL (Mike Ezzell) Mon Mar 10 1997 19:22

I have a customer that wants to keep VAXmail as their company mail because of
the number of VT terminals that they will have for a long time. They would
like to have a GUI interface to mail from the PCs. One option is to use the
MOTIF mail interface thru eXcursion, but this requires resources on a VMS
system. Are there other options? I noticed in the Pathworks32 project plan
the following:

    Mail-11 access via MS-Exchange on the desktop Important

was this a feature that didn't make it? Or does Mail-11 mean ALL-IN-1?

    MAIL-11 means VMSmail, not ALL-IN-1.

    Mail-11.... didn't make it. Nor did it make the 7.0a update kit,
    however... there is a move afoot to help the SBU/OSSG org to move to
    exchange, and ... this would involve that work.

154.3Any other ideas?BIGCHZ::EZZELLMike EzzellTue Mar 11 1997 12:215
Are there any other products that would help facilitate this?

Would Innosoft PMDF help with this?

154.4PMDF already offer server-side solutionsTHEBAY::WIEGLEBVoracious schools of lottery girlsTue Mar 11 1997 16:008
    Innosoft has never been into the client business.

    They do however offer POP3 and IMAP4 services into VMSmail already with
    PMDF and have for some time. It's just up to someone to write the MAPI
    interface for the Exchange client to talk to either of these, probably
    IMAP4.

154.5PMDF with IMAP looks like a solutionBIGCHZ::EZZELLMike EzzellTue Mar 11 1997 16:427
I met with another customer today that told me about what they are doing to
allow their PCs to communicate with VMSmail. They are running PMDF on their
VMS server and they are testing EMBLA and Simeon on the PCs using IMAP.
This combination seems to address the needs that I can see. Is this solution
missing anything that I should be aware of?

154.6Exchange Client already does POP3TLE::LUCECharlie Luce, Digital Unix QCSThu Mar 13 1997 21:238

    Microsoft already provides a POP3 interface for Exchange Client; they
    call it Internet Mail Service. IMAP4 is supposedly on its way.

Supposedly, but NOT in Exchange Server v5.0.... so it's anyones guess

Maybe it will arrive with the Winsock 2.0 stuff for Windows 95...
