1746.0. "S.E.A.L. still supported?" by MPOS01::CAMPBELL (Program Manager) Wed Jan 29 1997 16:23

    I was told by a reseller of ours that a customer of theirs called CSC
    for support (specifically a software patch) and were told the product
    they had bought 10 months ago (3-node seal) was obsolete and no longer
    supported. Anyone know that status of support on Digital S.E.A.L.?

    Thanks,

    Pat,
        Was SEAL ever supported ;-)?
    Seriously though,no it is not supported because there is no engineering
    group responsible for it.However,we have customers who are very happy
    with the components and who will never 'upgrade..'
    If you need new components,you can get them from fwalpha.aeo.dec.com
    via ftp.We can also provide support if your client is able to define
    what he wants(or you are) and as long as he is prepared to pay.I think
    that the support of SEAL sites is a good potential source of
    consultancy for I/I since the majority of the support required is
    systems and network engineering and not support in the classic sense of
    some component not working (mind you this WAS true in the original
    version of SEAL ).
    However,this is not a subject which can be easily dealt with via a
    CSC.I suggest that this needs to be done on a case by case basis.As a
    pointer,we have charged up to 25k$ per year for a software and systems
    audit on site plus software cleanup and renewal if need be.And it is
    surprising what other business turns up when you do an audit - so good
    in fact that we ought to pitch audits as loss leaders!
    cheers
1746.2CSC provides "best effort" supportCSC32::SHEAFFERFri Jan 31 1997 18:4811
    Pat

    The CSC provides best effort support for SEAL customers, no engineering
    support is available. We are recommending SEAL customers upgrade/migrate
    to the supported product AFWU. When a current SEAL support contract
    expires we are trying to ensure the contract cannot be renewed.

    In the UK, S.E.A.L. was never supported at the CSC. I'm left wondering
    why anyone sold one 10 months ago, but that's another story ...
