    	  Visual C++ 5.0 for Windows NT on Digital's Alpha Systems

              -------------------------------------------------------
    			     Released Product

                    ***FOR DIGITAL INTERNAL USE ONLY***

    The Visual C++ V5.0 for Alpha is available for Digital Internal Use.
    This kit is the kit that has been released to manufacturing.

    Users that have already registered for Visual C++ V5.0 in the
    DECWET::VISUAL
    notes file may upgrade their V5.0 installations without reregistering.
    Users that have not already registered for Visual C++ V5.0 may install
    this kit after registering for Visual C++ V5.0 in the DECWET::VISUAL
    notes file.

    This kit is made available to Digital by Microsoft under a limited
    license, and Digital needs to keep track of its usage.

    If you copy OR install this kit, please respond to note 2 in the
    DECWET::VISUAL notes conference with the information requested in it.

    Please read the following installation and configuration information
    and the VCREAD.HTM files in the top-level installation directory.

    Software Requirements
    ---------------------
        To use this version of Visual C++, your system must be
   		 running Build #1381 of Windows NT V4.0.
        To determine what build level of Windows NT you are using,
    		run winver.exe.

    Configuration Options
    ---------------------
    The Visual C++ kit includes VC50.zip, readme.txt and unzip.exe :

    	Size of items on the share:
    		VC50.zip	296,449,467 bytes
    		unzip.exe	175,616 bytes
    		Readme.txt	105 bytes

    	Size of uncompressed VC50.zip file:
    		VC50.zip	620 Mb

    	Size of the different install options for base Visual C++ kit
    	  (includes new system DLLs as well as product executables):
    		Minimum		140 Mb
    		Typical		200 Mb
    		CD-ROM		72 Mb
    		Custom(full)	399 Mb

    Installation Information
    ------------------------
        1. Copy vc50.zip and unzip.exe to a drive with 297 Mb of free
            space. Copy them from one of the following locations :

    	slugbt.zso.dec.com:/pub/vcxx/kits/V5.0		      (anonymous FTP)
        slugbt.zso.dec.com:/var/spool/ftp/pub/vcxx/kits/V5.0  (TCP/IP)
    	slugbt::"/var/spool/ftp/pub/vcxx/kits/V5.0	      (DECnet)

    	2. Change directory to the location of the copied files.

        3. The drive that will hold the uncompressed kit needs at least 620
            Mb of free space.

    	3a. To uncompress to the same directory as the compressed kit,
    	    run the following command :
    		unzip vc50.zip
        This will put the kit in the same directory.

        3b. To uncompress to another directory or drive, run the
    	    following command :
        	unzip vc50.zip -d <DRIVE>:\vc50
            (where <DRIVE> is a drive to hold the uncompressed kit)
            This will put the kit in <DRIVE>\vc50.

        4. Optional: Delete vc50.zip and unzip to conserve space.

    	5. To install VC++ V5.0, run the setup.exe in the root directory
           of the uncompressed kit.

    ----------------------------------------
    The kit contains:

    1. VC++ V5.0

    2. Internet Explorer

    3. DAOSDK

    4. OLE db

    5. Install Shield

    Visual C++ Bug Reporting

        ------------------------

    We have created an unrestricted Notes conference on DECWET::VISUAL.
    Please register and report any Alpha problems with Developer
    Studio, MFC, OLE, AppWizard, ClassWizard, the debugger, the compiler and
    all other parts of Visual C++ there.

    General questions about Visual C++ and general Visual C++ problems
    should be addressed to the Microsoft Compuserve forum or to the
    HUMANE::VISUALC notes conference.

    Questions and support issues about InstallShield or TGS should be
    reported to their respective companies directly.

East coasters can use \\ouellette.zko.dec.com\kits\vc50\setup.exe
or copy \\ouellette.zko.dec.com\kits\vc50\vc50.zip.
If you use the setup.exe to do the install, please choose
custom install and select documentation.
That'll (mostly) keep your installation from visiting my machine
after you're done. To clean it all up, choose tools/options/directories,
and remove my machine from all of your paths (include, lib, src ... ).

That way if the network or kit disappear, you won't get stuck.

5.43Heads-up - VC5 SP1 Alpha beta this weekDECWET::THOMASBug-for-bug compatible with IntelMon Jun 02 1997 18:4918
    We anticipate starting the beta of VC5 SP1 for Alpha this Wednesday
    evening (6/4/97). This beta will only last one week (like the Intel
    beta), so it is important to get feedback on this quickly.

    We ask that those of you who wish to take the kit to ISVs do so with
    the understanding that you will be the first line of support for those
    ISVs.

    If you encounter a problem with the beta, please post a note in the
    DECWET::VISUAL_FT notesfile. The more information you provide in the
    base note, the more likely we will be able to figure out the problem.

    Problems that also reproduce on Intel SP1 will be postponed.

    Problems that are Alpha-specific will be triaged and prioritized. Some
    may not be fixed in SP1.

    Thanks ... Mike
5.44VC5 SP1 beta availableDECWET::THOMASBug-for-bug compatible with IntelWed Jun 04 1997 19:2730
    The beta version of Service Pack 1 for Visual C++ Version 5.0 for Alpha
    is now available from ftp://slugbt.zso.dec.com/pub/vcxx/kits/V5.0.

    Copy over VC5SP1beta.zip, and unzip.exe (require 42Mb total).

    On an Alpha, unzip the kit with "unzip -d VC5SP1beta.zip" (requires an
    additional 163Mb).

    To upgrade your Alpha running NT 4.0 and VC 5.0 to VC5 Service Pack 1,
    run setup.exe from the top level of the unzipped kit.
