475.0. "v5.0 beta and v4.2 on same system possible?" by TINCUP::M_HERRERA () Mon Mar 10 1997 09:52

The inevitable quesion arises. It must be possible to install both versions of
VC++ on the same system. Anyone got this to work?

It is possible, but it is not supported. I think the V5.0 installation
explicitly asks you to remove previous installation.

It does work, but there are several gotcha's:
    1. they have to be installed in two separate directory trees
    (obviously)
    2. there is some overlap in registry keys that they use, so flaky
behaviour could occur when going from one use to another use
    3. the environment paths need to point to just one or the other
and each version's directory paths need to be consistent with that
    version

there may be other stuff as well, which is why having both is
    unsupported

rereading the release notes, installing both in separate directories is
not explicitly unsupported, so I take back my statement that it is
    unsupported.

the registery trees also seem to the separate, although it is still
    something to watch.

3 in the previous note is still a concern
