204.0. "Error accessing remote notebook" by BLAZER::MIKELIS (Software Partner's Eng. MR01-3/F26) Mon Apr 28 1997 17:36

I just installed the alpha NT client and am trying to read my local VMS
notebook. I have a pathworks share for my VMS drive and can see my notebook
from NT via DIR H:\NOTES\NOTES$NOTEBOOK.NOTE at the NT command prompt.

In the netnotes preferences box, i have use remote notebook clicked and
entered H:\NOTES\NOTES$NOTEBOOK.NOTE. I am using TCP/IP.

When i try to access the notebook i get the following message (garbage
characters and all)

COnnect to t}UW failed. Remote node is unknown.

why is it looking for a node name when i am sharing my notebook locally via
pathworks?

Best Regards,

204.1Can't interpret an RMS file internals using pathworksSMURF::usr407.zko.dec.com::pbeckPaul Beck, wasted::pbeckMon Apr 28 1997 23:3211
The remote notebook file is an RMS file -- accessing it over a Pathworks share
won't work (since your PC doesn't implement RMS).

You need to specify it as NODE::DEV:[DIR]NOTEBOOK.NOTE (this syntax works even
if you're using TCP/IP as long as NODE is in your hosts file).

You also will need to set an ACL on the notebook file so that it's readable by
the notes server, e.g.

    (IDENTIFIER=[DECNET,NOTES$SERVER],ACCESS=READ+WRITE)

	Where did you find this? I would love to run it instead of the
	teamlinks portion as I have converted to Exchange and am trying to
	get rid of the TeamLinks bits.

	Ok.... I was wondering why when netnotes reads my notebook to copy it
over, as soon as it hits a members only notesfile, it stops and doesn't list
anything it looked at beforehand. Does an error just shut it all down?

I found it at ftp://ntnone.zso.dec.com/kits/netnotes/

I got my clinet working by reading the doc at:
ftp://ftp-ccs.cxo.dec.com/Kits/NetNotes/

in a nutshell, once i set the acl on my VMS notebook and directories,
and added the correct node::dev:dir:notebook.note syntax, set the routh
throunh node, everything worked. i don't understand why i couldn't access
the notebook through the mapped drive though. what happens when i copy the
file locally? it gets converted somehow, correct?

Goto the 'Kits archive' then 'unsupported kits'.

	I'm having problems with getting it to copy the notebook still. I did
exactly what the document said to do, and each thing I did for vms worked, yet
the error I get is:

	X Error accessing Remote Notebook. Continuing with local Notebook

then on the bar it says:

	-NOTES-E-NOTMEMBER, you are not a member of this conference

So it is reading.... as that is the 2nd notebook entry. But then it dies.
Anyone know why?

I had to open my notebook from VMS, doing an notes/nonote
note$notebook.note, and then add myself as a member.

	I guess I am missing something here..... could you go into more detail
on this please? How did you add yourself as a member, and where?

	From VMS:

	$ notes/nonotebook drive:[dir]notes$notebook.note

	Notes> Add member -
		foley/access="foley@axel.zko.dec.com,axel::foley)/priv=moderator

	Notes> Exit

	The above said I was already a member. So I changed add to set. Then I
got the following error:

	Error in access list for member SILVA

I did have to add a ( after 'access=' and a " before the ) for it to work at
all. :-) But when I did a show mem silva, nothing changed.

don't use quotes in the /access=(list)

MODIFY

MEMBER

/ACCESS=(node::username[,...])
Specifies the unique identity of a member by assigning one or
more nodes and user names to the member's name. This name is a string
enclosed in quotation marks (the quotation marks are needed only if the
string includes any spaces) and having a maximum length of 63 characters.

The /ACCESS qualifier is necessary when two members who have the
same VMS user name need to be assigned different privileges or
different mail addresses.

You must enclose a list of nodes and names in parentheses.

204.17SNAX::NOONANsing the soul's bluesThu May 08 1997 03:257
    Right, but these are not VMS node::username access addresses, they are
    internet access addresses.

    I'm having the exact same problem.

RE: .17

Just put the domain name where you'd normally have the DECnet node name.
For example:

    /ACCESS=(lspace.zko.dec.com::winalski,gemevn::winalski)
204.19BIGQ::SILVAhttp://www.ziplink.net/~glen/decplus/Fri May 16 1997 13:1013
| <<< Note 204.18 by TURRIS::lspace.zko.dec.com::winalski "PLIT Happens..." >>>

| /ACCESS=(lspace.zko.dec.com::winalski,gemevn::winalski)

	I did everything all over again, and I did the above, which got
everything through ok. But when I try to run netnotes, it still comes up saying
I am not a member...... is there anyone in the HLO facility that has actually
gotten this to work who could stop by my office and lend me a hand? This is
just too frustrating at this point......

Glen, the "access" command isn't explaining why none of your notebook
file is being converted. It just explains why you can't get into the
members-only conferences.

204.24BIGQ::SILVAhttp://www.ziplink.net/~glen/decplus/Wed May 21 1997 13:048

	Shawn.... I'm not so sure about that..... but I will try something like
deleting them and seeing what happens. Hold on a minute:

204.25BIGQ::SILVAhttp://www.ziplink.net/~glen/decplus/Wed May 21 1997 13:0510

	Nope.... just as I thought. It has NOTHING to do with it. No members
only conferences and I still come up with it saying I am not a member.

204.26Same problem hereTLE::dolphin.zko.dec.com::brodeurmbrodeur@zko.dec.comWed May 21 1997 14:3713
Just to add another data point...

I had exactly the same problem as described in this string, and
tried all of the same recommended strategies with no success.

I eventually gave up and manually added all of my entries/classes
to a local notebook and updated the "seen map" manually as
well. (A real pain in the neck.)

For what it's worth: sitting in ZKO-2, using TCP/IP with a
route-through node.

204.27BIGQ::SILVAhttp://www.ziplink.net/~glen/decplus/Wed May 21 1997 14:394

	I can add them manually..... but I was hoping for everything to remain
in sync.

Write or reply to a note in some conference from Netnotes then see
what it thinks you are!

I had similiar problems with moderating a conference, it appears to
be some DNS issue, in that my PC name is ast323, but I was appearing
as maxine1.
