Here's one of those deals that in a typical DEC league, with no salaries,
just wouldn't add up. I'm not sure it does anyway, but it's approved.

    Tuttle and Hardy have made the following deal:
    Hardy sends Vladimir Guerrero, Quinton McCracken, and Tony Saunders

    for Mark McGwire.

Seriously, are trades like this in the best interest of the league. In the
off season, I can see it because salaries balance the scales, but during the
season, when the cap is eliminated, it doesn't seem right. What do you guys
think. If others don't agree with me, then obviously my thinking is off.
62.39Well nothing wrong with it as far as I can seeSCASS1::WATKINSMon Apr 28 1997 21:5511
    Well in this case neither owner will be above the 286 cap.

    Before the trade Tuttle is setting at 201 and Hardy is at 281.

    McGwire 24
    Vladimir Guerrero 6, Quinton McCracken 1, and Tony Saunders 1 total = 8

    After trade Tuttle 201 - 8 + 24 = 217
                Hardy  281 - 24 + 8 = 265

62.40Deal approvedEVMS::WRIDERemember what the Dormouse saidTue Apr 29 1997 11:2524
Hardy/Tuttle deal approved.

The only provision given in the rules for voiding a trade is if it hints
of "collusion". My understanding of "collusion" is that both owners would
have to get together on a deal that would enhance the chances of one team
while killing the chances of the other. I don't see collusion in this deal,
especially if McGwire suffers his normal injury and Guerrero comes back
from his to challenge for Rookie of the Year.

I find it awfully hard to make judgements about who makes out the best in
most trades. This goes back to my first try as commissioner of a league,
the year after Phil Plantier had the great month in the fall for the Red
Sox. (I think he hit 11 or 12 homers in 30 games or so.) Anyway, a couple
weeks into the next season someone traded Plantier for Rob Deer and I was
absolutely appalled! I couldn't believe that the deal could be on the up-
and-up, but let the deal go through (against my better judgement).

Guess what? Deer had the better year and Plantier was soon traded away and
began his career of bouncing up and down to the minors. Shows you what I
know! ;^)

BTW, I think Sam's now over the limit having picked up 16 ducats in salary.

                              Steve
62.41REQUE::HARDYTue Apr 29 1997 12:3717
Wow, and to think I debated this deal for 20 minutes before getting
up the nerve to pull the trigger... Guerrero is one of the two or
three guys labeled "mega-prospect" this year, and he's within a
couple weeks of rejoining the team. McCracken is a good hitter
with speed, and most important, he plays at Coors Field. The three
OF in front of him are constantly injured. Saunders has lots of
potential, and pitches in a great pitcher's park, with a good
bullpen behind him. McGwire will obviously put up huge numbers
as long as he is healthy.

	Money is a big part of the deal. I'm down 16 ducats and
over the cap, where I hate to be. Being able to pick up an occasional
gem in the weekly draft is the best way to restock a team, and I'm
temporarily prohibited from doing that.

62.42my opinionTARKIN::MAYOTue Apr 29 1997 13:1012
Now we know how 26 MLB teams feel when the Atlanta Braves pick up a
McGriff or Neagle for next to nothing...

But, as I thought when I made the Maddux deal with Barry, Will posted
his intentions in the notesfile, so anyone could have approached him
about a deal (I did). Kudos to Sam for pulling off the heist. His
team was racked with early injuries, but he's still in third place.
Now he's ready to add McGwire, Lankford, and Juan Gonzalez to his
lineup. Bummer...sounds like a recipe for championship #4.

62.43My last two centsOGOPW1::ogodhcp-125-112-132.ogo.dec.com::weinsteinWill a New England team ever win another title??Thu May 01 1997 19:238
I realized there is nothing illegal about the trade. The rules basically
state that the only way trades are illegal is if they leave unbalanced
rosters. I just wanted to hear other owners' thoughts on this. My team
really isn't in the hunt this season anyway. In fact, if things don't turn
around for me within the next couple weeks. I will be looking to deal
players like Barry Bonds for value-priced players that can help me next
season. I really don't feel that's fair, but I may be one of the few that
feel that way, so why not?
