2227.0. "When Excel5 object not modified, 'save document' dialog box" by BACHUS::dbc624.bro.dec.com::POPPE () Mon May 12 1997 19:44

Hi,

After upgrading LinkWorks from V2.1.7 to V3.0.8 the following is observed:
-When an Excel5 document is opened (edit), and without mofifying it is closed,
then the dialog box 'save document' is showed.
This was not the case in V2.1.7.
Outside LinkWorks Excel behaves normal, i.e. no 'save document' dialog box
when the document is not modified.
With WinWord 6.0 behaviour in LinkWorks is also normal.
The customer has Windows95 clients with Excel5 and Word6.

I tested this in a Windows95 client with Excel7, and I also get the 'save
document' dialog box. This will be confusing for the users.
Note 2209 mentiones similar behaviour.

Is there a solution for this ?
Or something I overlooked ?

Regards,
Marc

LinkWorks checks if the document is "dirty" (modified) and prompts you
to save. I believe that Excel keeps the access date, so the document is
always "dirty".

The difference with 2.1 is that LinkWorks opens the file in OLE mode.
This allows you to make links between LinkWorks objects. When you mail
them, the links are retained.

Workarounds are to open the document "read only" by default (i.e.
double click calls ReadObject instead of EditObject) or switch off OLE
(override CallObjectDocument, see other notes).

2227.2Works fine nowBACHUS::dbc624.bro.dec.com::POPPEWed May 14 1997 17:436

I switched off ILockBytes as in note 1332.1 and it works fine now, thanks

2227.3No ILockBytes = No linksUTROP1::PETERS_MWed May 14 1997 21:364
    Your customer has to know that links do not work anymore. A link from
    Word to Excel is broken when the document is accessed by another user.

2227.4Also between Excel spreadsheets?OSL09::BJARNEendless loop (n). See LOOP, ENDLESS.Thu May 15 1997 15:1314
    Martin,

    this does also imply that links between Excel spreadsheets doesn't work?

    Or, will it work for
    	Excel 	- 	Excel links

    but not for
    	Word 	- 	Excel

    My guess: If you turn off the ILockBytes mechansim, links won't work
    at all.

Thats right. Without ILockBytes, LinkWorks does not sit in between.
You you get a link to a local file, which is the temporary file
created by LinkWorks. Other users do not have access to this file
of course.
