2391.0. "Ultra line at its end?" by OSBONN::PER (Per Nisslert, SWAS Gothenburg, Sweden) Tue Apr 29 1997 13:16

Hello,

Forgive me if this has been discussed before, I'm new to this conference.

My manager has approved my buying a new laptop. I've had an Ultra II in mind for
quite a while. Now, to my dismay, we have announced EOL of the Ultra II without
announcing a successor in the ultra-thin, ultra-light category.

Does anyone know if there's an "Ultra III" in the works? Or, perhaps an easier
statement to make in an open notes file, if such a machine is *not* in the
works. And, in that case why we have given up trying to provide the sexiest
laptops around.

I suspect the PCBU will neither confirm nor deny a replacement to the
Ultra II series, as any such product would be considered unannounced.
(See notes 2358.* for a previous discussion on this particular topic.)

The HiNote VP500 series is a good (immediately available) alternative,
   and particularly for multimedia-oriented applications.

PC Week did, though, in an issue I got last week, report that Digital was
going to introduce a new Ultra line with speeds up to 200MHz - manufactured
by LG Electronics (formerly Lucky Goldstar), the folks who make the VP series
(if I am not mistaken). I was puzzled to note the weight of the system being
listed as 6+ pounds, though, which didn't seem very "trim" to me. Digital,
of course, declined comment.

You are mistaken. And the article in PCWeek has a few mistakes, too.

Then I suppose it's coincidence that my VP535 has "LG" stickers
plastered in various places? Who does make the VP series for us?

As usual, Dave Ferreira has the last (correct) word.

Thank you, Richard, but as you know, I have an unfair advantage. ;-)

The glass in your Anderson Window is made by PPG but when the sash
doesn't close properly do they go back to PPG and blame them for the
    paint chipping off ??

In any case, yes there is, on SOME models, an LCD panel made by LG.

Then again, I don't know who made the screws that hold in the HDD or
where the base plastic chemistry came from..

The reply in .6 was intended to explain why "LG" stickers might
appear on Mr. Lionel's VP535 (reply .4). Different manufacterer's LCD's
may use different video flex cables, inverter boards, and the like, making
such stickers a convenience when observed at repair depots.

I've never opened up my VP535 (except in the approved manner to add
memory). I saw LG stickers on things like the power adapter, etc.
