2359.0. "Enabling suspend password breaks suspend to disk" by VAOU09::ras018p06.vao.dec.com::FBROWN (Fred Brown, NT Wizard) Mon Apr 07 1997 05:29

I have one of the new HiNote VP 545 PCs and have noticed a quirk/problem
witht the suspend to disk problem. I'd like to know if this is the expected
behaviour or whether there's a problem here.

I've set up the security on my PC to ask for the Admin password on both
power on and resume. I've also set up my PC to suspend to disk after being
in suspend mode for 1 minute. (Normally I'd make this longer but the
problem exists and any interval).

If I suspend my PC by either hitting the suspend button (or on/off button),
of by using the suspend menu item on the Windows 95start menu, the system
suspends as expected. After about a minute, the system wakes up ready to do
a suspend to disk operation. Unfortunately, it simply sits there waiting
for me to type the Admin password. It's not until I type in this password
that the suspend to disk starts up.

To my way of thinking, that's a bug. Normally, I wouldn't expect to be
around when the suspend to disk wakes up. I'd typically set the timeout
value to be something like 30 minutes, not one minute.

In the meantime, I've disabled the "password on resume" option but I'm
converned about the security aspects. If "password on resume" is disabled,
it doesn't even ask me for the password on a resume from disk operation.

Any thoughts?

I've seen this too, on a VP535, but it's not consistent. About one out of four
times it will do this.
