2350.0. "MCI calling card/Hayes Optima/Hinote VP?" by USOPS::JOHNSON () Thu Mar 27 1997 12:37

    Hello,

    My manager recently got a Hinote VP. It has a Hayes Optima PCMCIA 336
    modem in it, and it's running Windows 95.

    There seems to be a problem using this modem with a calling card. When
    calling from a hotel using 9 for a local call and using an MCI calling
    card, it appears to dial the number, get the MCI "boing", but then it
    seems to lop off the last 2 calling card authorization numbers. We're
    using the "MCI via 102220" calling card option.

    I've called Hayes and they suggested that I add the command ATX1 to the
    extra settings box in the advanced connections tab under modems. I
    tried this and it didn't help.

    Does anyone have a suggestion on how to set up this laptop to be able
    to dial a 9, then a Digital RAS number, then the MCI card number?
    Thanks for your help. I look forward to hearing from you all...

I know of a number of people who have had the same problem. It seems as if the
length of the dial string buffer that the 33.6 modem can handle is less than other
modems that we've used in the past. (The modem must accept the entire dial string
into its internal buffer before it can process the string; the internal buffer in
this modem seems to be shorter than the internal buffer in the Digital-badged PCMCIA
28.8 modem.)

Maybe if enough of us bug the vendor, we'll see a firmware upgrade to increase the
size of the internal buffer ??
2350.2What modem has big enough buffer?USOPS::JOHNSONThu Mar 27 1997 16:436
    Hi Bob,

    Thanks for your reply. Any suggestions on what PCMCIA modem would have
    the correct size buffer and would work with the Hinote VP? Thanks.

    I had a similar problem after upgrading to 33.6. Try setting ATX3 in
    modem-properties-connection-advanced-extra settings. This ignores
    no dialtone. I did have a Megahertz 28.8 upgraded to 33.6 that did
    not exhibit this problem, so it appears the firmware upgrade for the
    optima needs a little work.

    hope this helps.

2350.6Not a character buffer issue - buffer = 255 on OptimaTRLIAN::mkodhcp-46128111.mko.dec.com::LailRobert G. LailWed Apr 02 1997 21:5339

	RE .3

	According to the Hayes FAQ posted on their web page the
character buffer on the Accura and Optima modems is 255 characters so
this problem should not be caused by the old 40 character buffer
issue.

	RE .0

	I get the "no dialtone message" from Windows95 and the modem
fails to complete the credit card string. I suspect it is timeout
issue rather than a real lack of dialtone because the same thing
occurs when I replace the $ or W characters with the comma which is a
dumb wait rather than an attempt to detect any call progress tone.
I'm still trying to get it to work so I will also try the X3 command.

	For the folks with a Hayes Optima modem there is an online
Windows format help file available from the Hayes Web site. The URL
is;

	http://www.hayes.com/popfiles.htm

	Scroll down the page to you get to O336HELP.EXE. CLick on the
filename and it will download the file. Place the file in a temp
directory and double-click and it will unpack. Run the Setup
executable to install the helpfile.

	There are other good files available on that web page for
Accura and other Hayes Modems.
