2332.0. "PROBLEM: VP500, WinNT 4.0 Servicepack 2 vs. Power Management" by NETRIX::"c-kuhnem@mail.dec.com" (Martin Kuhne) Fri Mar 14 1997 08:15

System: Vp535; Windows NT 4.0 with Servicepack 2 installed
BIOS: 1.05 (latest)

Drivers: NT Upgrade kit from www.pc.digital.com aka
http://pcbu.ako.dec.com/~ftp/index/ix_HiNote_VP500_notebook.htm
QGHNV53K.EXE - HiNote VP500 (models 510-545)
 Windows NT 4.0 Upgrade Kit V2.0

Problem: the power management driver from the nt upgrade kit
overwrites the nt hal, system hangs at reboot

Is there an update available?

regards

    You must re-install most drivers, especially the the power management
    driver, after upgrading to SP2.

    Do you have a clean version of SP2? Microsoft's Web server had a
    faulty copy posted until February; however, the CD-ROM is clean.

Thanks for the quick reply...

The power management drivers supply a new hal.dll (hardware
abstraction layer) probably because nt does not support
power management by itself.

SP2 updates this hal.dll also. With sp2's hal installed, there
is no power management. With sp2 and the power managemet's hal,
the system hangs when rebooting.

Time for an IPMT?

2332.3Xircom driver is not a strangerBACHUS::DEKEYSERTP/IM CSC - Belgium DTN 856-8779Mon Mar 17 1997 08:268
Martin,

If this is the same system as the previous note with the xircom card,
the hang happens because you have this xircom driver with epm installed.
I had the same problem on my system and i decided to use my system without epm.
The other thing I have now is that a shutdown initiates automatically a reboot.

2332.4xircon driver the problem?NETRIX::"c-kuhnem@mail.dec.com"Martin KuhneMon Mar 17 1997 10:308
Yes, it's several problems on the same system.
So you think it's the xircom driver...
any help? driver downgrade?

Anyone running a DEPCM or any other PCMCIA NIC with winnt 4.0
service pack 2 and power management installed?

2332.6pcmcia.sys ?DECPRG::PRSS2::csfr::markusMon Apr 07 1997 11:0987
Hi Martin,
I do not know if my reply is relevant to the VP but maybe it is.
It is also some kind of reaction to 2272.1.
I downloaded the new Xircom drivers for the CEM28 (March 97) and
reinstalled Xircom adapter on my Hinote Ultra II (SP2 and reinstalled MM
and EPM support).
Since this change I wasn't able correctly shutdown WNT (the computer just
hang with screen Saving data .... and I had to manually switch the computer
of and on again. The secondary effect was that CHKDSK was run on each
startup of the computer and sometimes reported wrong files.
After a little homework I looked to the MS Technet (see attached). So I
changed pcmcia.sys from our MM and EPM kit to the same file from NT SP2.
Now I can shutdown correctly and my power management (at least what I have
tried) works O.K.

Since the Xircom driver is probably the same also for CEM33 I would expect
that this note could be also valid for that adapter.
Another story is new Xircom driver and PW32.
