158.7problems powering/turning on a HiNote VP 5357241::SCHULLMANDan SchullmanTue Apr 01 1997 21:4116
Well, I'm having trouble turning on a HiNote VP 535. Most of the time I
have to press the suspend/resume button twice, if not more. On the first
press, the icons in the little LCD window flash briefly, I hear some noise,
and then a click and nothing. Press it again (and timing seems important),
and I then hear the disk start to spin up and the display comes to life.

These difficulties are after the system has been shut down (vs. suspended).

Several other folks with new VP 535 systems here see varying degrees of
power-up difficulty.

These days the units are sent to California. Hopefully under a week to
repair, but still damned inconvenient!

Anyone else seeing such problems?

I have. I once thought that connecting a monitor to the video
port cleared things up, but maybe it was just a timing thing
with the power button.

Have not had the problem for 3 or 4 weeks though.

I haven't seen this particular problem - I have seen times when the button
wouldn't suspend the system, though.

Oh, I've had this problem. It seems fine right now, but
it gets 'balky' about powering-on on occasion. On a flight
last week I took it out, pushed the button, waited, tried
again, waited, ... finally just put it away. Kinda embarrassing
for Digital to have one of their machines not even come on.
Sure glad it didn't happen at the security checkpoint at the
airport. No problems the last few days however. And I haven't
noticed any consistent reason it gets in this state.

I've had the problem of power-on button not working
and suspect it's because my latch is a bit flaky
(dropped the HiNote one too many times, I guess).

If it doesn't work, I firmly close the top, then
re-open & it's always started after that.

RE: .7

Well, I'm about to send my unit in, and here's more particulars:

I continue to have to press the suspend/resume button at least twice to
power on the system after it's powered off. On the first press, all of
the icons flash briefly (except that the battery icon has already been
on, indicating charging), and I hear like a static click/pop (which I
suspect has to do with the power being applied). About 5 seconds after
the initial press, I hear another static click/pop and then nothing.
If I then promptly press the button again, it now comes to life, the
icons flashing briefly as before, then the sound of the disk spinning
up and the icons flashing briefly again, and then the screen display
comes to life. If I wait too long for the second press, it behaves as
if a first press. I didn't experiment to see what constitutes "too long",
but it's certainly less than a minute.

This happens whether I'm running from A/C power or a battery.

A very interesting piece of info... it appears NOT to happen if I only
have 8MB (vs. 40MB) of memory in the system! I didn't have access to
another pair of 16MB DIMMs to try, so I don't know if it's specific to
the DIMMs I have or if it's related to the extra memory (or something
else).
