200.0. "D-1000" by BIS1::MENZIES (Uncle Blinkey!) Fri Oct 20 1995 10:31

    I popped into our local FNAC last night and saw a CD-ROM being
    advertised called: D-1000. Apparently it contains 1000 doom levels for
    DOOM 1 & 11.

    I thought the price tag was a bit over the top (30 quids)....are these
    original wads ???

doubt it.

prolly another one of those "not necessarily the best of the net" ftp archive
collections.

    I saw that one on the weekend too. I wouldn't bother if I were you.
    Most WADS on those compilations are rubbish. Only a small handful of
    WADS are really good. Hunt down the RAVEN levels; they are excellent.
    Alternatively, if you play with the keyboard, start DOOM again but use
    the mouse instead... that's what I'm currently doing but it's really
    hard. I know I need to be able to perfect this if I'm ever going to be
    any good in Deathmatch...
200.3BIS1::MENZIESUncle Blinkey!Mon Oct 23 1995 11:494
    But Jamie, why is the mouse better than the keyboard...is it the speed
    at which you can turn or what ???

    You can move and turn faster, fire more accurately.

    I *guarantee* that a 'great_at_the_keyboard' player would lose *every*
    time to a 'great_at_the_mouse' player... it's that much of a
    difference...

    Jamie.

I recall seeing comments about a US national DOOM tourney where a
keyboard-only player came in second to the Id guys.

But yeah... if you can't compensate for the difference turning speed btw.
mouse and kbd, yer maggot fodder.

    So what moves/type of moves do they do with the mouse? I use the mouse,
    but only for aiming and for firing. For all other movement I use the
    arrow keys (I use the mouse in my left hand, and hit the keys with my
    right). I'd be interested to know what techniques others use.

    Ahhh....but is this turning on the spot ?

    Cos I do a mean running turn which is very fatal!

    >Ahhh....but is this turning on the spot ?

    Try it. With the mouse, try turning a really tight circle as fast as
    you can. Then try doing the same with the keyboard. It's obvious, once
    you've tried it, how advantageous it could be in a deathmatch game.
    Also, even running seems to be faster. I've seen an opponent move so
    fast away from me that they literally weren't displayed for some of the
    movement they were going so quick...

    Jamie.
200.9BIS1::MENZIESUncle Blinkey!Tue Oct 24 1995 10:407
    Well I did five or so levels with the mouse last night. I agree that
    you can turn faster on the spot and sliding in and out from behind
    walss is excellent. However, i'll be clobbered if I can run forwards
    with just the mouse....I keep getting RSI!!! So I opted for a combo of
    shift+forward for moving and mouse for turning and aiming.

    3 button mice seem to be the best for Doom.
200.11PLAYER::BROWNLTyro-Delphi-hackerTue Oct 24 1995 16:043
    How does that work then? Don't tell me, the extra button is <SHIFT> :^(

    I spoke to someone last night who said he does the following :

    Right Mouse : Move forward
    Left Mouse  : Fire
    Shift       : Run
    X           : Backwards

    I'm going to try it tonight. The backwards key sounds like a good idea.

    My brother uses middle mouse button for forward, so he can spin and go
    forward at the same time.

    I thought I Was ok at Deathmatch, but he kicked my butt when he was
    using the mouse.

    I'm almost embarrassed to admit that I hadn't realised that one could
    redefine the keys and buttons.
