53.0. "Mouse problems with shareware v1.2" by 45187::WATSONR (Are all these your guitars ?) Thu Jun 16 1994 10:38

Were the mouse problems when using shareware version 1.2 ever resolved ?
There seemed to be a large amount of anguish at the time of the v1.2
release but things have gone very quiet of late.

Did you all move to registered versions, back to v1.1 or all you all
waiting for shareware v1.4 to fix the problems.

Alternatively, did anyone find out just which mouse driver you WERE
supposed to use with v1.2 ?

What mouse are you using? I usually use the keyboard myself, but I have
used my mouse from time to time (more accuracy on those long shots...)

Id has not yet fixed the mouse problem introduced in version 1.2.
I have found that a new mouse driver is about 99% effective in
solving the PS2 mouse problems. The driver is called 'gmous102'
and is available somewhere in the archives on node winnah.

I've logged a few hours using MS Mouse driver V9.01 (for the V2 soapbar
mouse). So far it hasn't hung but has "lost" the mouse a couple of
times. It also complains at startup about the mouse "SPRINT mode not
available" or something similar. (Of course being a DOS application it
issues an error message then immediately clears the screen 8^)

I may have a solution for all you die-hard mouse users who have
the dreaded Doom-Hang!

I have just found a file called GMOUSE.ZIP on the Internet that
is rumoured to be able to fix this problem.

I'll be talking with John to make it accessible on SHUVVA, and
you'll see a confirmation here when it's available.

A brief word of caution re: Gmouse.

First off,I am pleased that if fixed the runaway mouse problem that I
experienced with V1.2 of DOOM.

All I wanted to use Gmouse for was DOOM (to fix the aforementioned
problem). I commented out the reference to my normal mouse driver in the
DOOM section of my config.sys and added Gmouse.com to the DOOM section of
my autoexec.bat. Good stuff! However, I then made the mistake (I found
out later when my mouse pointer became conspicuous by its absence) of
running the Gmouse setup program, which went through my config.sys and
deleted every line referencing mouse.sys!! Thank goodness I didn't run the
Windows setup!! Worst of all, it didn't appear - at least I couldn't find
it - create a backup copy of my config.sys. Luckily I just made a copy of
my config.sys and autoexec.bat to show someone here at work, and he still
had it.

Anyway, beware.

53.9can't overcome mouse problemUHUH::DILLBERGERBob DillbergerThu Jul 21 1994 14:0918
I've tried gmouse; no change. I've got the registered version of Doom; no
change. On my system (Gateway 486/66V), it appears that using a PS2 mouse is
simply impossible. So I bought a serial mouse for $10, and after several days
and phone calls of trying to get it to work, I can now "mouse" in Doom. But
by that time, I'd gotten so proficient at using the keyboard that the mouse
slowed me down.

While I'm on the subject of controllers, anybody tried using a joystick?
I've got the Gravis <mumbly> Pro, and while I like the feel, I find it's not
sensitive enough to control my aim accurately. That is, I have to move the
stick a lot before the image changes, and then it changes all at once and
overshoots the point I'm trying to aim at. The only reason I'd like to use
it is to save my keyboard; I tend to get "excited" playing Doom and press
down pretty hard on those keys (the harder you press, the faster you go,
right? :-). Oh, and of course, if there's already a joystick topic here
I haven't seen, feel free to point me at it.

    Bob:

I started a thread in note 59 regarding "controls" - keyboard, Gravis
gamepad, joystick, Cyberman have all been discussed.

What type of keyboard do you have? Mine doesn't seem to work any faster
no matter how hard I press 8^)

    re: .10

    What is the <mumble> ?

Gravis gamepad is _not_ proportional, therefore is much like a keyboard
(turn left OFF or ON only).

The Gravis joystick is proportional (and has several adjustments too).
Maybe one of these is out of whack?

It means there's something in the name between "Gravis" and "Pro"
but I can't remember what it is. It's the "pro" joystick, with
4 (I think) buttons.

I tried using my PFCS/WCSII and the joystick bites the big one, too darn

Since I upgraded my mouse driver I now have the infamous ps2 mouse bug and
I haven't been dooming at all....sigh...

I need my shotgun fix!

Hi! I'm new at Doom (and Pc's really) and use the mouse. I have been
running shareware version of doom (v0.99) and am now hooked. I haven't
had any problems up until recently. It started gradually.

First, the gun started shooting intermittently as I moved forward.
Then it got worse. Then it was like the demo was running and I couldn't
    gain control of it.

I am not sure if the problems I have are the "known problem" or its
my hardware or something else. What is a good description of the "symptom"
    of the mouse problems?

    	thanks in advance,

    Bob:

This problem has been fixed in the latest release 1.666 which up until
a day or two ago was available for download from SHUVVA::.
Unfortunately it looks like SHUVVA:: has been TFSO'd. A search has
begun for a new home. Watch this conf. for a posting.

Thanks Jason. I thought that this was a bug...I'm curious however,
I played doom for hours and hours without any problems. Why didn't the
bug appear at first? Just curious....was it because I began to make it
further and further into the game?

p.s. my wife started complaining that I was spending too much time with
this. I did the right thing; I let her play a while. Now....she begs me
to give her a chance to kick butt!!

I had the same thing happen once with v0.99. Locate your default.cfg
file, blow it away, and create a new one (run setup.exe). Should fix
    your problem..

53.22twas a broken mouseWRKSYS::BCLARKwack-a-mole with no handsMon Sep 19 1994 12:4516
I fixed the problem. Being a real novice at Pc's was part of the
problem. At least that made it harder to figure out. I didn't know if
my problem was Doom bug, Hardware, or something I did adding faxmodem
and not setting up my irq's right or??

As it turned out, my problem was hardware. My mouse had the cable
incorrectly routed on the inside. The wires intermittently caused the
middle mouse button to stick on. This really screwed me up because when
a mouse button is stuck, the mouse driver doesn't get loaded.

Anyways, I am getting better at this now. I want the registered
version now, and now I hear Doom II is out. Ya just keep up with it
all. I find myself dreaming now, going through mazes!

    cheers,
