    Sorry, but I've removed the file from that location, I am currently
    setting up a large repository of Doom files on one of my machines
    so that those who don't have access to FTP can still get everything.

    The location of this is:

    	SHUVVA::DKB0:[DOOM]

    There are a variety of subdirectories already in place and hopefully
    I will be able to keep all of the files up to date. Should there be
    anything that people find missing or corrupted then please contact me
    on the address above.

    By typing the following you can recursivly search all sub-directories
    for a given filename. So if you want to find a 1.666 patch you would be
    best off typing (note the use of 3 '.' after DOOM) :

    $ DIR FLYTE::USER1:[ARCHIVE.DOOM...]*166*.*

    Directory FLYTE::USER1:[ARCHIVE.DOOM.MISC]

    DM1666RP.TXT;1      DM1666RP.ZIP;1      DM1666SP.TXT;1
    DM1666SP.ZIP;1
    DM1666SW.TXT;1      DM1666SW.ZIP;1      DM1666_A.TXT;2
    DM1666_A.ZIP;1
    DM1666_B.TXT;1      DM1666_B.ZIP;1

    Total of 10 files.

    You can then copy the patch over as in .9. One patch is for shareware
    versions, the other is for registered, and so on.... have fun!

Hmmm I've had this before but can't for the life of me remember what the
problem is.....

It's either PKUNZIP doesn't know where you want the files put (doubtful)
or else it's a corrupt .ZIP file.

I think last time I got this, it was the latter problem, and next time
around it worked okay.

Hmmmmm.

    Any of you copying .TXT files from FLYTE to a VMS machine and trying
    to view or print them may have found problems because some of the files
    were in some sort of Ultrix format.

    Hopefully this is all fixed now, files should be formatted correctly.

    	It's not Ultrix format, copy it to DOS, and you you will find it
    look normally. :^) If you insist to view the file under VMS. I had
    wrote small programs which convert different text format. Send me mail
    if you need it.

    Hmm, I found viewing them in DOS by the command TYPE wasn't any good,
    though admittedly using EDIT to view them solved the problem. Since my
    printer at home is pretty naff I thought it might be a good idea to
    convert all the text files.... this doesn't pose a problem I hope?

> I am a complete novice and I would like to get started playing Doom.

> What do I need to copy to get an intro to this game?

For the latest shareware version in file lengths that can be put onto
floppies, copy these files:

FLYTE::USER1:[ARCHIVE.DOOM.MISC]DM1666_A.ZIP;1
FLYTE::USER1:[ARCHIVE.DOOM.MISC]DM1666_B.ZIP;1
FLYTE::USER1:[ARCHIVE.DOOM.MISC]DM1666_A.TXT;3
FLYTE::USER1:[ARCHIVE.DOOM.MISC]DM1666_B.TXT;2

If you can handle big files, copy just these two instead:

FLYTE::USER1:[ARCHIVE.DOOM.MISC]DM1666SW.TXT;2
FLYTE::USER1:[ARCHIVE.DOOM.MISC]DM1666SW.ZIP;1

Use PKUNZIP version 2.04g (the most recent) to unzip the files into a
directory on your hard disk. Then I believe you need to read the readme
file(s) for instructions on how to install/configure.

NOTE: this version of Doom is the shareware version and will *NOT* allow you
to play 'pwads,' which are user-created levels (different from the regular
Doom levels). Some pwads such as ALIENS-TC and STARWARS are 'conversions' of
the Doom game to something more like the Aliens and Star Wars movies. IMO,
the level of creativity found in the pwads is more than enough reason to call
1-800-idgames and shell out the $40 for the registrered version (or purchase
it used from someone).

DOOM II is not backwards compatible with Doom (I) pwads. Presumably, sometime
real soon now the folks out on the internet will create editors for Doom II
pwads, but a vast number of excellent pwads for Doom (I) will probably never
get 'ported' to Doom II. But ... to quote Id Software ... "then again, I
could be lying."

    :-)

    Incidentely (most of you ftp'ers will know this already) there's a new

    It's address is

    On the subject of WAD's, there really is starting to be a lot out there
    so rather than clutter up flyte (which has most of 'em on but I can't
    guarantee everything!) just request a WAD and I'll see if I can get it

FWIW...

According to the real DEU author, this is not an official DEU product.
Someone hacked an earlier version of DEU to make it support Doom II, and
didn't honor the DEU_Author's request to rename the hacked_DEU to somehting
else. But hey, if it works...

According to the same post, DEU 5.3 will be the next DEU to be released with a
new UI and full Doom II support ... so sez the 'official' DEU author.

    1. Well you'll need a modem and an account of some sort of ftp server,

    2. You'll need remote log-in to the Digital Network from home. Maybe
    fine if you're an engineer like yours truly but not very feasible is
    you were, say, in accounts.... I dunno...!?

Andy,

I currently use VMS copy to copy files from FLYTE:: etc. to my SUBPAC::
account. I then log in from my PC at home using COMMWORKS/TSONLINE and use
the "SZ.EXE" Zmodem file transfer program to download the files.

Zmodem at 9600 baud (HLO's max dialin baud) takes roughly 1 minute per 100
blocks (average of 850 byte/second).

Sneaker_net(tm) (copying the files onto floppies and walking them home) is
slower since I have to walk down the hall to the PC *AND* break up any >1.4MB
file into floppy-sized chunks. And the best part is that I don't have to
remember to bring the floppy disks into work :-)

	If there is a demand, and if I can find a little disk space, I should
be able to host this archive.

But note, this machine will be in the US, and won't be right on the network
backbone. It is, however, fairly well connected, and up 99.999% of the time.
If it isn't, I don't get my mail, or notes, or anything else, so I have some
motivation to keep it up...

Let me know,\
