234.0. "LDS discussions in other computer networks" by NEXUS::S_JOHNSON () Thu Apr 20 1989 19:12

Subj:	Welcome to the LDS mailing list!

This is a copy of the letter I usually send out to new people on the LDS
mailing list. I thought I'd just warn you that you will probably be using
DECnet mail-naming conventions rather than internet mail-naming
conventions, since you are inside DEC proper.

That is to say, you should send mail to "decwrl::lds-request" rather than
"lds-request@decwrl.dec.com", and you should use "decwrl::lds" rather than
"lds@decwrl.dec.com". Other than that, I believe the rest of the letter is
still appropriate.

Welcome to the LDS mailing list!

Welcome! I've added your name to the mailing list, so you will start
getting mail addressed to lds@decwrl.

I have some archives from the list, if you are interested in doing some
back reading... Please let me know.

Included is the first message that went out to the list, back in Oct 1988.

Subject: Welcome to the new LDS mailing list!
- --------------------------------------
By popular demand, we have just set up a mailing list for the
discussion of general church related topics. Since you have received
this letter, you are on the list. If you wish to be removed please
see the instructions below.

The current list is based on a collection of LDS net-people compiled
by Greg Woodhouse of UC Santa Cruz, plus a few others that we thought
would be interested.

Our intention is that this be used as a forum to discuss church
related topics (doctrine, culture, life in general, whatever). We
don't currently expect traffic to be very high, but this remains to be
seen. It has been suggested that we announce the existance of the
mailing list in the Church News, and we would appreciate any comments
or ideas on the matter.

Anyone at all can send mail to the list, but only people on the list
will receive it. It works like this: a person who wants to send a
message to everyone on the list just needs to mail it to the following
address:

     lds@decwrl.dec.com (via ARPA/Internet mail)
or decwrl!lds (via UUCP mail; decwrl is a backbone site)

Bitnet and CSNet users may have to use a gateway.

If you aren't exactly sure what address to use to send your mail to,
look at the return address on this letter. It will send mail back to
me (Michael Fetterman). My username is "michaelf". Substitute the
letters "lds" for my username in the return address, and you will be
sending mail to the whole group.

If you have questions about the mailing list, or want to get somebody
added, or you'd like your name removed, PLEASE send mail to
"lds-request" instead of "lds". The address "lds-request" will send
your mail to the mailing list administrator instead of everyone on the
list. In this way, we can avoid broadcasting administrivia all over
the world.

We're anxious to add new people to the list, so if you know of someone
who'd be interested, please send mail to "lds-request" (not "michaelf").

Thanks, and welcome to the wonders of electronic mail!

One thing to note about this link, is that the response is not the
same as NOTES. We don't get to interact with the link and get feedback
right away. The stuff is sent thru in a batch mode operation of
some sort. I sent in my request tuesday morning and received an
acknowledgement yesterday. I got my first posting this morning.
I don't know what the turn around time on posting something is yet,
but in time we'll find out. I think it gets processed nightly,
so if I post something today, I'll see it posted tomorrow and maybe
some response will come back two days from now.

GILROY is now being used as a gateway for the mailing list instead of DECWRL.

Requests to be added to the list should be sent to GILROY::"lds-request".
Mail to be sent to the entire list should be sent to GILROY::"lds"

Here it is. The long awaited Call For Votes.

Here is the proposal:
--------------------------------------------------------------
Newsgroup: soc.religion.mormon

Status: Moderated by Rawlin Blake at blake@nevada.edu

Description: Discussions regarding Mormons and Mormonism (Moderated)

Charter: This news group is for the discussion of all things
pertinent to Mormons and Mormonism. The following
topics are unwelcome and run the risk of being
             rejected by the moderator:

             1. Flames and Flame wars.
             2. Posts that reveal or discuss the specific details
of the Mormon Temple ceremony. Mormons hold the
temple and what goes on inside sacred. Discussing
its details shows either little understanding of,
or no respect for Mormon beliefs. If you are not
sure of the propriety of a post, submit it to the
moderator with a note asking for guidance.
Discussions about the temple in general are
                welcome.
             3. Topics not related to Mormonism.
--------------------------------------------------------------
To vote for the proposal send e-mail to mormon-yes@byu.edu
To vote against the proposal send e-mail to mormon-no@byu.edu

Replying to this post is *NOT* a valid way to vote.

Questions about the vote should be sent to gritton@byu.edu

Those on Fidonet that want to vote must send Fido mail
(not echomail) addressed to "UUCP" at 1:104/424

and the first line of text must be one of the following:

To: mormon-yes@byu.edu
To: mormon-no@byu.edu

Jamie Gritton (gritton@byu.edu) will be the vote taker. His vote
taking program will only look at the ``To:'' and ``From:'' mail headers
and ignore everything else. So it is important that you send your
vote to the proper address.

If you vote more than once or send a vote to each address, only
the most recent vote received will be counted as valid.

The vote taker will post VOTE ACKnowledgments during the CFV so
that you can check to see if your vote has been received.

The polls will officially open at
12:00:00.00 AM Mountain Time on 16-MARCH-1992,
and will close promptly at
11:59:59.99 PM Mountain Time on 10-APRIL-1992.

Votes received before or after this period of time are invalid
and will not be counted as part of the vote.

ADMINISTRIVIA:
This message will initially appear in:
news.announce.newgroups (and the moderator will cross post it to:)
news.groups
talk.religion.misc
soc.religion.christian.

It will also be sent to:
mormon-l@byuvm.bitnet
lds@wsl.dec.com
mark.tuck@f537.n106.z1.fidonet.org (who should post it to MORMON)

During the vote, this message may be re-sent periodically to all
of the above places except news.announce.newgroups.

There are several ways you can send mail outside DEC.

    mormon-l@byuvm.bitnet   ->   decwrl::"mormon-l@byuvm.bitnet"
    lds@wsl.dec.com         ->   decwrl::"lds@wsl.dec.com"

decwrl:: can be replaced with gilroy:: or wsl::

Furthermore, the lds@wsl.dec.com may be sent as wsl::"lds". Heck,
wsl::lds may even work. I'm not sure about the last one.

    Good luck.

The vote for soc.religion.mormon ended on 10 Apr 1992.
There were 135 valid "yes" votes and 169 valid "no" votes recieved.
This group will not be created, and should not be proposed again
until six months have passed. A list of votes recieved follows.

There were irregularities with the vote:

One person switched from yes to no, and one from no to yes.
Many repeat votes were cast. These simple cases were handles
as mentioned in the CFV.

There were duplicate votes from the same people using different addresses:
n a0174589@mordor.dseg.ti.com (Brian Morgan)
n a0174745@mordor.dseg.ti.com (Bob Orton)
n gly007@mordor.dseg.ti.com (Geo Yeary)
n ipreq@mordor.dseg.ti.com (James S Niederland)
n mred@mordor.dseg.ti.com (Ed Melcher)
y nik@bike.rad.washington.edu (Nik Kovalenko)
y tpowell@imagine.convex.com (Timothy Powell)

All votes from the site mordor.dseg.ti.com are considered invalid.
Most of these votes arrived within minutes of each other, five of
the seven duplicate votes were from there, and all but one were "no"
votes. This suggests that someone there sent a vote from every account:
a clear violation of the guidelines. This does not affect the outcome.
Were these votes included, the vote would have been 136: 245.

234.7Outside BBSLUNER::PIMENTELWed Apr 22 1992 11:3224
Hello, my name is John Pimentel and I would like to introduce to a BBS
I run in Hudson, MA. The board is called IN REMEMBERANCE and is
operational 24 HRS every day with speeds upto and including 9600 V.32/
V.42bis. The is primarily dealing with GENEALOGY and I keep on-line
20+ conferences (ECHOMAIL) specifically geared to various interests
throughout the world. Recently, I added a network called LDSnet.
The the conferences cover DOCTRINE, RESEARCH, PRIVATE conversations,
RUTH (specifically women's conference), and more. The catch is this
in order to read all of the areas in this new network, you need to be
a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The
package comes to my BBS with another conference called INTERFAITH
    which is for everyone.

So if you have a modem, and would like to talk to other LDS without
"anti's" butting in and distrubing the Spirit then give it a try.
The BBS number is (508) 562-5786. (Note: The priviledge upgrade
is performed nightly, thus it will take two calls, or if you do
plan to call then you can email me your name and password to use
on the BBS and I'll add you. Please include a phone number and
if I don't know you, and your ward/stake).

    Thanks for lending your ear.
