1123.0. "So long ..." by BUFFER::VICKERS (and thanks for all the fish) Sat Jul 25 1992 05:59

I am in the fifteenth year of a happy and enjoyable career
with Digital. The joy of helping customers has been the
nicest part of the career. I have decided that it is time
to move on so that I can better serve customers. I have
joined a small services company called Excellent Office
Systems. Joe Whatley, who is the chairperson of the
Application Integration Special Interest Group of US DECUS,
is the President of the company and my partner.

Excellent Office Systems has the goal of providing the
highest quality office systems to its customers. We will
focus on Digital ALL-IN-1 customers in the next few years
and evolve with our clients. We have formed partnerships
with a few customers and plan to form partnerships with a
few more. Our goal is not so much to make money but to
provide the services that will make the users of our
clients' system productive and happy. We certainly plan to
have fun doing it and believe that our partners should, too.

I am quite excited about this new chapter in my career but
am sad to leave a place like Digital where I have so many
wonderful friends. The best news is that I also have many
          friends who are customers.

          My addresses are

          501 Gibson Street
          Leesburg, Florida 34748

          904-326-2873

          Vickers@eisner.decus.org	(Internet)

My last day as a digit is August 14, 1992 or later depending.

          As always, keep the faith,
          don

1123.13A little question this leaving raisesMAULS::REDMONDThoughts of an Idle MindTue Jul 28 1992 15:099
Question: Does the move from "Vickers of DEC" to "Vickers the customer" mean
that we all have to be nice to him after he leaves? If so I shall be put
under substantial pressure ;)

For those who can make it, a European "Vickers farewell" is terribly possible
at DECUS in Cannes in September..... (Don is giving a seminar on "how to
upgrade to ALL-IN-1 V3.0 there).

1123.22The end of an eraSAHQ::PRYORIt never ends this way in the moviesWed Jul 29 1992 05:4544
Don,

I guess it's only proper that I add my best wishes to the list. I think I may
know you better than most and perhaps know of what you've accomplished better
than most.

I know I'm preaching to the choir in this particular public forum, but I wanted
to share an opinion that I formed many years ago and this feels like the right
time and place.

I've been involved in ALL-IN-1 almost as long as you have. We've shared some
great experiences in the early days and had some great opportunities to get to
know the people behind ALL-IN-1. I feel that I've been fortunate to be
acquainted with John Churin, Skip Walters, Marty Skinner, Rick Warford and lots
of other people who were instrumental in translating ALL-IN-1 from a concept in
Churin's head to a great piece of software.

I've known lots of people (OK, some) in various marketing, sales, and sales
managment roles who have helped make ALL-IN-1 the great success that it is.

However, if I had to pick a single individual to nominate as the person MOST
responsible for the fruition, success, and 'religion' of ALL-IN-1 it would be
you, Don.

I remember in the early years, how you travelled tirelessly, literally around
the world, spreading the religion. When you weren't training people, fixing
problems, fighting with idiots, answering questions, making ALL-IN-1
presentations, building ALL-IN-1 demos, and managing your system, you were
helping customers understand ALL-IN-1 and how it could be molded into real
solutions much better than any other tool.

It was your energy, passion, and tireless efforts that made the crucial
difference time after time, in account after account. You even got your
manager excited enough to join the religion and help 'sell' ALL-IN-1
internally.

ALL-IN-1 would not have happened without the dedication and efforts of lots of
good people. But nobody worked harder, cared more, or accomplished as much as
you did.

You changed a lot of minds and provided leadership and guidance to a generation
of digits. I wish you the very best and hope you keep the fires burning.

    Indeed. Best wishes, Don.

Remember WPAFB? Remember v2.0 prerelease training? Remember v2.3
training in Atlanta when Kevin & Tony & Jim Saunders & JF were the
instructors, and you bludgeoned each one unceremoniously? Remeber
DECworld '87 and "bumper cars" with the good Dr.?

While our occasions to work together were few/far between, there are
certainly lots of memories. DEC will be the worse for your moving on.

    Don,

As many have stated, it is difficult to appreciate the impact that one
individual can have on a product's success. It is even more difficult
to appreciate the impact that a single person can have in easing the
working lives of so many people. I hope that your contributions are
    always remembered.

I am honored to have known and occasionally worked with you. After
your "move" from Charlotte, I worried about you. I am glad to see you
pursuing your passion once again. Now I shall be able to stop worrying
    and rejoice.

I shall miss your quips and reparte'. Even more I shall miss your
burning passion for the customer and "what is right".

    Keep the faith!

    Until we meet again,

        Don,

We have started this farewell message to you numerous times. It is
so hard to put into words how we feel. (We being the ALL-IN-1
Application Programming team at the Customer Support Center). We
have talked about your leaving among us and wanted to let you know
how much you will be missed.

When we heard the that you were leaving, we were shocked. We just
couldn't imagine you not being around on the Network and in the
Notes files (that's how most of us knew you before we met you in
person). The loss to the ALL-IN-1 world is difficult to measure.
Your ideas, knowledge, encouragement and enthusiasm have helped us
many times over to exceed customer's expectations. Thank you.

We do wish you the very best in your future. No matter what you do
you will be successful, of that we are sure. You will be in our
thoughts often and we hope you have good memories of us too.

Don, you will be missed by many and especially by your friends here
at the center. We don't want to say good bye so we will just say
see you later and keep smiling.

        Thank you for EVERYTHING,

Don -

Its taken a couple weeks for the shock of your announcement to wear off.
I'm saddened to think of what we are losing by your leaving, but the OA
community at large will only benefit from your (now) unrestrained presence.

Your unique viewpoint on the reality of the company, ALL-IN-1, it's related
software, etc, was always refreshing and entertaining, to say the least.

You'll leave a void that I don't think anyone could begin to fill.

Best wishes to you and Joe in your new endeavor. I'm sure I'll see you at
DECUS in the future.

Good luck,

You will be sorely missed by the entire ALL-IN-1 community, I'm sure.
I have a tremendous amount of respect for your often-politically-
