1076.0. "V3.0 instal failure" by STRIKR::THATCHER () Mon Jul 20 1992 14:59

    I tried to upgrade my 2.4 system to V3.0 over the weekend.
    Unfortunately the installation failed with the following error:

%VMSINSTAL-I-MOVEFILES, Files will now be moved to their target directories...
%DELETE-W-SEARCHFAIL, error searching for $1$DUS100:[SYS0.SYSUPD.A1030]CM_PRE_MO
VE_OASCT.SCP;*
-RMS-E-FNF, file not found
%RENAME-E-OPENIN, error opening $1$DUS100:[SYS0.SYSUPD.A1030]OAN$SAMPLE_CONFEREN
CE.NOTE;1 as input
-RMS-E-ENT, ACP enter function failed
-SYSTEM-F-NOPRIV, no privilege for attempted operation
%VMSINSTAL-E-INSDFAIL, The installation of A1 V3.0 has failed.

    The protection on the provided file was:

Ted> dir $1$dus100:[sys0.sysupd.a1030]*.note/sec/dat

Directory $1$DUS100:[SYS0.SYSUPD.A1030]

OAN$SAMPLE_CONFERENCE.NOTE;1
                     12-MAR-1992 09:36:38.09  [SYSTEM]              (RWED,RWED,R
E,RE)

Total of 1 file.

    I have subsequently renamed the file to NOTES$LIBRARY without any
    problem, which is what I thought the kit would be trying.

    I installed from the SYSTEM account which has all privs. I'm upgrading
    from 2.4 to 3.0 on VMS 5.4-3.

    My kit is dated 23-MAR-1992 (US_GB 24-MAR-1992, A1POST030.A
    16-APR-1992). My log file is PILOTS::a1v30_instal.log.

    My one confession is that I removed MICA during last week and got in a
    bit of a state with OBJs and OLBs (and FLBs), but I assumed that the
    kit would be overwriting them.

    Any ideas ? thanks,

    Robert.

1076.1This is how it works...IOSG::PYEGraham - ALL-IN-1 Sorcerer's ApprenticeMon Jul 20 1992 15:3726
    I'm sure you know that you can ignore the first error about
    DELETE-W-SEARCHFAIL etc...

    The installation does the following with the sample conference:

    	SET FILE/OWN=SYSTEM

    	IF it thinks that VAXnotes is installed THEN
    		provide the file to NOTES$LIBRARY
    	     ELSE
    		provide the file to SYS$HELP:[ALLIN1_EXAMPLES.BRITISH_EXAMPLES]
    	END IF

    The definition of "is notes installed" is: Is NOTES$SHARE in SYS$LIB,
    (and is the version V2.1 or greater) and is NOTES$LIBRARY defined (and
    does it point to a valid directory)

    I know the syntax of the Help directory isn't correct, but you get the
    idea.

    Remembering that VMSINSTAL runs with SET PROC/PRIV=(ALL,NOBYPASS) you
    should be able to work out what the problem is!

    Cheers,

    Graham
1076.2Wrong protection on NOTES$LIBRARYSTRIKR::THATCHERMon Jul 20 1992 16:278

    NOTES$LIBRARY.DIR had protection of (,,,) with an ACL for NOTES$SERVER
    and rename failed with NOBYPASS.

    SET PROT and all seems OK

    Thanks Graham.

1076.3Note 1238 in 2HOT::VAXNOTES_BUGSIOSG::PYEGraham - ALL-IN-1 Sorcerer's ApprenticeMon Jul 20 1992 17:488
    I was going to post a note from the 2HOT::VAXNOTES_BUGS (Press KP7
    etc.) conference that explained what the default protection on
    directories should be, but I can't get to the conference right now.

    So instead, I'll post a pointer to the note (it's 1238) for people to
    consult when it comes back!
