Our customer site has a dilema that involves UIC-based rights
identifiers and all-numeric VMS account names.  The VMS account names
are 6 digit badge #'s and many of the new options in ALL-IN-1 v3.0
rely on the VMS account name being the same as the UIC-based rights
identifier.  As expected, when creating a VMS account there is no
UIC-based id created. The customer realizes that all-numeric VMS
accounts are "discouraged", but internal security requirements have
dictated the use of badge #'s as VMS acount names for a number of
years.  The customer is not willing to rename all of the thousands of
VMS accounts at this point due to problems with retraining the users. 

Would it be possible to modify VMS in such a way that would allow the
user to input his/her 6 digit account name at the Username: prompt and
then we would append an alpha character, i.e., "X", to the string and
then validate against the UAF which will contain badge # + "X" account
names, i.e., "012345X"?  If so, where is the best place to incorporate
a mod?  Also, we are concerned about ramifications this will have on
other types of user validation, such as DECnet COPY, etc.  The
customer has the source listings for VMS and is aware that for any 
upgrade to VMS, these mods must be reincorporated.

Anyone else done something similar?  
Suggestions?
Should the customer just "Bite the bullitt"?
Are we crazy?
