1530.0. "Can't print to Genicom printer" by TLACS1::ORAPIN () Wed Sep 30 1992 08:24

Hello,

I have problem with printing in ALL-IN-1. I have new GENICOM 41170 printer and
I have already added this printer to ALL-IN-1 but when I print any mail or
document from EM and WP, the header of print-out has some garbage and form-feed.
I can print from DCL by using "print/que=sys$per file_name" to this print que
with no problem.

The following are all set up for this printer :-

$ SHOW QUEUE SYS$PER/FULL

Terminal queue SYS$PER, on TXD3, mounted form OA$HLS_132 (stock=DEFAULT)
	/BASE_PRIORITY=4 /DEFAULT=(FORM=OA$HLS_132 (stock=DEFAULT)) Lowercase
	/OWNER=[1,4] /PROTECTION=(S:E,O:D,G:R,W:RW)

From Manage Site Printers (MSP) in ALL-IN-1 menu

	Format Printer Type	: LA210
	Destination Printer Type: LA210
	Print queue		: SYS$PER

From Manage Printer Types

	Printer Type		: LA210
	Forground Function	: DO WPPSYSTEM
	Background Function	: DO WPPBGFORMAT
	Printer Device		: LA210
	Printer Form		: OA$HLS_132

Any suggestion ?

Thanks and best regards ... Orapin

1530.1What are you printing?TRON::NEWLANDRichard Newland, IOSG, REO1-D/4AWed Sep 30 1992 14:5221
When you are printing from DCL what type of file are you printing? For
example, is it an ASCII file?

When you are printing from ALL-IN-1 what type of document are you printing?
printing? For example, is it a WPS-PLUS document? What happens when you
print an ASCII document from ALL-IN-1 to this printer?

The differences you are seeing may be caused by what you are printing,
rather than from where you are printing. When you print documents from
ALL-IN-1 they will be formatted by the approriate formatter, for example,
WPS-PLUS documents will be formatted by the WPS-PLUS formatter. As the
Printer Device is LA210 the WPS-PLUS formatter will insert control
sequences into the listing file to reset an LA210. It may be these
characters which you are seeing as garbage.

Why have you configured the ALL-IN-1 Printer Destination for the GENICOM
41170 printer to have a Printer Device of LA210? Is this printer supposed
to be compatable with a DEC LA210 printer?

1530.2Do you have non-digital printer typeTLACS1::ORAPINThu Oct 01 1992 12:0713
    From DCL, I print only text files.
    From ALL-IN-1, I print mail from EM and some documents which created by
    WPS-PLUS. All of these have some garbage in the head of print-out.

    The reason why I use LA210 for Genicom printer is I just want to try.
    I'm not sure whether it's compatible with LA210 or not.

    Anyway, do you have .prc and .pra for non-digital printers such as
    Genicom printer ?

    Thanks for your help

    The WPS-PLUS group supply & maintain the printer tables. I suggest
    you ask in the WPS-PLUS conference (MAGIC::WPS-PLUS).

    Cheers,
        Paul.

Are the mail messages WPS-PLUS or ASCII?

Also, it's possible that your system has been configured so that ASCII
messages and documents are formatted using the WPS-PLUS formatter instead
of the ALL-IN-1 Ascii formatter. Look at the FORMAT master entry for
'ASCII EDT' and see if the 'Standard formatting' field is set to 'Y'. If
this is the case then the formatted listing files created for ASCII and
WPS-PLUS messages and edocuments will contain LA210 specific control
characters which your Genicom printer may print as garbage.

If you used a Format style of 'LP11' the WPS-PLUS formatter will create a
simpler listing file which the Genicom printer may be able to print.
However, you lose some WPS-PLUS formatter features such as bolding.
