DECpage as a product has been stabilized, but will continue to do things the
same way it did before the new versions of WPS-PLUS (4.1) and ALL-IN-1
(V3.0) were delivered.
Since DECpage was stabilized nearly two years ago, there are some things it
just can't do with the newer software: For example, DECpage has no idea
what to do when it encounters a WPS-PLUS document with a multicolumn region
(using the new multicolumn editor), nor does it know what to do with
automatic indent tabs. Both of these items were introduced to WPS-PLUS long
after DECpage was stabilized.
If you're wondering why DECpage was stabilized, here is the theory behind
stabilization: When the product is seen as complete, close the coding
process and stop issuing software updates, but continue to offer a complete
and workable product for those people who want it or require it. Product
stabilization only occurs when a variety of the following happen:
- Either the product's sales have fallen off significantly;
- There are very few features which could be added to enhance the product;
- Engineering costs are greater than projected sales revenue.
Stabilizing the software allows Digital to continue to sell and maintain the
product as it worked when the coding was completed. What this means to
DECpage users is that if the current version of DECpage and WPS-PLUS' (and
ALL-IN-1's) older version worked well together they still do. It also means
that those same features can still be used with DECpage and the new WPS-PLUS
and ALL-IN-1.
DECpage users cannot however expect to use the new multi-column formatting,
or the new indent tabs, or import DDIF formatted text and expect DECpage to
understand them--all of those features were designed well after the time
when DECpage was stabilized. If DECpage users have a need for new documents
with multicolumn areas, they can still use the old multicolumn method. This
is just one example of how well our WPS-PLUS Engineering team works and for
their overall concern for backward compatibility and customer satisfaction.
It was always on their mind. They only added features, took away none.
The really good news and the bottom line is: If users had used DECpage in
the past and liked it, they can still use it the same way today with the new
WPS-PLUS and/or ALL-IN-1.
