723.0. "List Processing limitations ??" by JOCKEY::MARSHALLJ (Glad that the devil is red ......) Wed May 20 1992 17:10

Hi,

A customer of mine is still running ALL-IN-1 V2.3 and one dept. is planning to
use the List Processing system tp produce a set of standard invitations to an
airshow. They have expressed some concerns/questions about whether their are
any restrictions (specifically size) when using LP. As I have used it for about
2 minutes in my entire lifetime, any help would be greatfully appreciatted.

(I know there is a document size limit in WPS+ but can't remember whether its in
the region of 16000 - see below).

1. LIST DOCUMENT - maximum size/maximum number of lines

      The proposed List Document for Farnborough is likely to be approximately
      16,000 lines long, based on 800 records with 20 lines per record.

      It would not be feasible to split the document (eg by Surname or Company
      Name A-C, D-G, H-L etc) because of the various selection criteria which
      will apply to all records.

      An error message "...Document too large..." has appeared from time to time
      whilst editing a similar sized document.

      Can anything be done to increase the maximum document size ?

      Can the User Account be expanded in some way to enable the document to be
      used without this problem occurring ?

2. LIST DOCUMENT - Record Structure

      Below is the proposed record structure which will be used, although there
      may be a few more fields to be added :

      <COMPANY>
      <SURNAME>
      <INITIAL>
      <POSITION>
      <TITLE>
      <DEAR>
      <ADDRESS1>
      <ADDRESS2>
      <ADDRESS3>
      <ADDRESS4>
      <ADDRESS5>
      <ADDRESS6>
      <SHOW>
      <DINNER>
      <TABLE NO>
      <NOTES>
      <>

      Does the length of the field names have any bearing on the overall
      capacity of the List Document ?

      Would abbreviated field names (eg <ADD1> <ADD2> etc) increase the capacity
      of the Document ?

723.1Ask in WPS-PLUS conferenceIOSG::NEWLANDRichard Newland, IOSG, REO1-D/4AWed May 20 1992 17:3418
List Processing is a sub-system of WPS-PLUS.  WPS-PLUS documents have a
limit of 32,000 lines (that's the documented limit with WPS-PLUS V4).
The output document from List Processing is a WPS-PLUS document and
therefore is subject to the 32,000 line limit.

Whenever this limitation has been discussed before the suggested workaround
has always been to do what you say is not feasible, that is, split the
LIST document into smaller documents. The main limiting factor is the
number of lines in the output document. Changing the number of fields or
there length will not directly affect this limit.

Since you are using ALL-IN-1 V2.3 (WPS-PLUS V3.0) I suggest that you ask in
the WPS-PLUS-V3 conference if the document size limits used to be
different.
