1443.1An alternativeEZWIND::LEVYWatch Out! You might get what you're after.Tue Sep 19 1989 13:1929
Let me suggest an alternative to a "live" instructor.

Ed Services has put together a couple of EXCELLENT Computer Based Instruction
courses on DECwindows and FileView. These are user-level courses that take the
individual from never having used a mouse to some reasonable level of
proficiency in the environment.

The courses are:

Introduction to DECwindows Systems for VMS Systems
       EY-8273E-RC-0001

			and

Introduction to VMS DECwindows: FileView and Its Desktop Applications
       EY-A888E-AG-0001

The advantages of these courses are that users can take them at their own pace,
they use DECwindows to teach DECwindows, the "instructor" never leaves...the
course is always available if folks need a refresher.

I'd strongly suggest that you try this avenue first. I've had success with the
first course at my site and am planning on installing the second one today.

If you want to contact me about these, feel free. You could even come on over
to Westboro to check 'em out...not too far from Shrewsbury.

Why doesn't Ed Services make these kits available over the net?
I'd love to install them on the cluster for DECUS in Anaheim. The
	customers would eat this up.

I asked the same question at a recent meeting. I was given to understand that
the reason had to do with Ed. Services wanting revenue for the courses that they
developed.

BTW - Be careful if you're installing these and your system is not at a
"released" version of VMS. I had to modify KITINSTAL.COM to get it
to install on my X5.3-461 system.

Sigh.. You'd think they'd have a clue that if it was available
to alot of internal people, more external people would want to buy it..
Now I have to go order the thing.. Hope it works with 5.3 and DW V2.

RE: modifying kitinstals.. That's almost a regular occurance for
us system managers up here in the land of a new baselevel a week.

	Thanks,

They work ok with VMS V5.3 and DECwindows V2.

The only gotcha is that the demonstrations are all done using pictures of
DECwindows V1.

When you get to practice, however, you use the "live" system. The only problem
is that the user must understand that things will look slightly different in
the "live" system than in the demonstrations. Could be confusing for extremely
naive users.

I haven't tried everything in the FileView CBI yet, but things seem ok. When
you select "practice", the CBI puts up a window for instructions and informs
you that you must start the application that you want to practice.

I don't supposed they have a DECwindows programming self-paced course
    available as well?

Yes! I haven't opened it up (doesn't belong to my group), but the relevant
information is:

"Programming X Version 11 in the DECwindows Environment"
		Self-Paced Instruction
		EY-C165E-MA-0001

This one appears to be Self-Paced. Not Computer-Based.

If someone checks this out, please post your critique here!

I can recommend Jeff Strait of the Marlboro, MA, ISWS Group. He
presented a three-hour session here in Standards and Methods Control,
which got us all up to speed quickly. Some people just learn better
with a demo and lots of time for questions and answers.

Re: .2

>	Why doesn't Ed Services make these kits available over the net?

We don't make them available over the net for legal/licencing reasons.
The problem is that although these are software, up to now they
have not been licenced in the same way that most DEC software is
and there are some significant intellectual property protection
risks especially when dealing with an multi-national network. We
are working on LMF compliance for them and things may change in
    the future.

We will be showing these at DECUS but I'd also love to get them
on the cluster. Mike, I'll call you to set this up.

The internal transfer expense relief (50% of list) that we get is not
the reason for charging, it is meant to offset the manufacturing,
    admin, and shipping costs.

This I REALLY appreciate! The CBI will now be a selection off of
ALL the session manager menus that the customers will have at
Anaheim. I believe that alot of customers will like this ALOT
based on what I saw in Atlanta.
