2656.0. "Object and background ?" by PRSUD1::VEZINA (If ya can't fix it, don't break it!!) Wed Apr 25 1990 15:52

    Hello to all Windowers,

I'm currently plodding along through tons of documentation
    	to get to know DECwindows...

In the meantime, I must answer a customer's question ASAP,
i.e. is it possible to define a background graphic image
(like a map) and to move an object over it (like a plane)
without having to worry about redrawing the background ?

With the appropriate hardware, this would be achieved by
merging (ORing) two bitmaps... Is this in the realm of
    	DECwindows possibilities ?

    					Thanks in advance,
    						Mike

Yes, this is possible. Your customer can either do as you suggest
(allocate seperate planes for your background and foreground) if the
hardware supports it, or your customer can draw the background into a
Pixmap, and tell the server that this Pixmap is the background for the
window. When your object moves, you can clear the area, and the server
will copy from the appropriate area of the pixmap into the window.
