404.0. "compose character key?" by BLUGUM::SMITHI (He ate the dice at 9:15 am.) Tue Mar 14 1989 19:55

Hi

On a VT200 and VT300 series terminal I use the COMPOSE CHARACTER a fair bit.
Degree sign, copyright and multi-national character set (for testing our
product).

I can not seem to get it to function on DECwindows? Is it supposed to? How
do I enable it. Without this feature I am forced to use a VT300.

404.1ALT/Space is what you needLNKUGL::BOWMANBob Bowman, CSC/CS SPACE TeamTue Mar 14 1989 20:166
As mentioned elsewhere in this conference, the key with a keycap often labeled
"Compose Character" (LK201 keyboard), is the ALT key for DECwindows. To get a
compose character function you press ALT and the Space bar at the same time,
then press the key combinations for the compose character funciton you want.

Well I must have done something wrong. Using ALT/SPACE bar gives me a row
of spaces. Do I need to turn off auto repeat to get this to work?

thanks

    ALT, THEN Spacebar THEN compose characters sequence.

    That's "alt and spacebar at the same time", then let go.

For the fumble fingered:

Hold alt down

Type space

Release alt

type two characters of the compose sequence.

Burns (who always screws up the timing when he tries
       to push down two keys at exactly the same time)

re: .1 "the ALT key for DECwindows" - what does the "ALT" key
    actually DO for you other than to concoct a "compose" key!?

    That's a problem for some customers: 3 keystrokes now become 4
    keystrokes. Is there no workaround, or way to otherwise define
    "compose" to be "alt and a space"?

Under DECterm, ALT is only used as a lead-in for COMPOSE sequences. However,
some other "native" DECwindows applications use it pretty extensively (DECwrite,
for example).

404.8Wishlist perhaps?56860::MERRILLAll we need now is a sanity check ...Fri May 12 1989 17:3110
    Yes, I figured the applications would use it, but DECterm? Maybe
    DECterm should have a customize-keyboard option for

    	O	ALT:= Shift+Compose-character+<alpha>
                COMPOSE:= Compose-character <alpha> <alpha>

    	.	ALT:= Compose-character+<alpha>
    		COMPOSE:= Compose-character+<SPACE> <alpha> <alpha>

    Take it to the DECTerm conference....I'm sure there's a wishlist note
    there.
