| DECwindows (V1 and V2) consists of:
- an implementation of the X Window System for DEC hardware and the
VMS and ULTRIX operating systems
- the XUI Toolkit, which provides a widget set, session manager, and
window manager to support applications embracing the XUI look-and-feel
DECwindows V3, when it ships, will have bundled with it OSF/Motif, which is an
X Windows Toolkit, window manager, and session manager to support applications
embracing the OSF/Motif look-and-feel.
When the paragraph you quoted talks about "enhancements" to X, it is referring
to two things: (1) XUI (as described above), and (2) bug fixes and changes to
improve performance above and beyond what is available from the MIT X11.3
release.
> Is DECwindows, then, asuperset of X windows?
We provide XUI and some performance enhancements not available in the MIT
X Windows software tape. To that extent, we are a superset of X Windows.
However, I think it's more accurate to say that DECwindows is DEC's supported
implementation of X Windows for our hardware/operating system platforms.
> Is DECwindows, and will it remain, a enhancement of the X windows
> environment?
Yes, in that we ship the XUI Toolkit, window manager, and session manager today
(all of which are not available from the MIT tape), and we soon will similarly
ship OSF/Motif (also not part of the MIT tape).
> With the introduction of OSF/Motif will DECwindows then be a
> separately licenced product?
You will have to ask DECwindows product management about that one.
