1065.0. "V2 IFT1 gives font error when using DECalc in a terminal window" by PRAVDA::JACKSON (The Indescribable Wow!) Wed Jul 05 1989 18:51

DECalc Plus V3.0A
DECterm terminal emulator
DECwindows V2 IFT1
VMS V5.2-43Z
VAXstation 3100/GPX

When entering DECalc, I get the following error
(First, DECalc tells me that it's an unsupported terminal, but then assumes VT100
which was just fine with DECwindows V1 (nee V5.1)

The message box contains the following:

*  Can't find font -*-Terminal-Medium-*-Normal--14-0-*-*-*-*-*-1

Re: .0

The problem is that in IFT1 DECterm looks for fonts by pixel size instead
of by decipoint size (so the Little Font and Big Font are different sizes
on 100 dpi systems). The bug is that DECterm should double the pixel
size for double high characters instead of doubling the decipoint size
(that's why one of the fields in the font name is 0). You can work around
the problem by defining these resources in your decw$defaults.dat file:

*bigFontSetName: -*-Terminal-*-*-*--*-180-*-*-*-*-*-*
*littleFontSetName: -*-Terminal-*-*-*--*-140-*-*-*-*-*-*

(If you want different Little and Big font sizes on a 100 dpi monitor,
change the 180 to 140 and the 140 to 100.)

Just create one in your DECW$USER_DEFAULTS: directory (defaults to
SYS$LOGIN:) if you don't have one.

QAR it against DECwindows - I've had similar problems in DECterm. There
seem to be some fonts missing in the IFT1 kit.

Add the two resource definitions I gave in reply .1. I made a mistake in
my previous reply, though: the file is decw$xdefaults.dat. (You could also
edit decw$terminal_default.dat).
