1914.0. "Ultrix WS and FMS on a VMS system" by CRONOS::DEMICO (Antonella De Mico DTN:870-2931) Thu Dec 14 1989 08:34

Hello

I'm now using an Ultrix WS (DECstation 2100 with ultrix v3.0 and DECwindows 1.0)
and when I do a login on a VMS machine (3100 with VMS 5.3) via DECterm and I
run an application using FMS (ALL-IN-1 just to have much fun) I'm not able to
insert any character in my form. What I always get is "field full" or something
like that.
The same happens if I run FMS standalone.

Is there any workaround/setup/customization that I can apply in order to get
everything (more or less) working?

Thanks in advance
Antonella

1914.1You might ask this in the DSSDEV::FMSNOTES conferencesFIGMNT::MUNYANSteve Munyan, ZK2-2/O23, DTN 381-2264Fri Dec 15 1989 17:3113
I suggest you ask this in the FMSNOTES conference on DSSDEV. However, you might
want to gather a little more information before you enter a note there.

For example, when you are on the ULTRIX machine are you doing the VMS equivilent
of a SET HOST? Not knowning Unix I can't give you the equivilent.

The reason I ask is that FMS makes use of a VMS terminal driver feature called
Read Verify. If you are using SET HOST the Unix system, the SET HOST program
on the Unix side needs to be able to handle Read Verify operations. If this
isn't true strange errors can arise (unless the terminal emulator is smart
enough to tell FMS that it can't handle Read Verify processing).

    There is a known bug with "dlogin" on ULTRIX. Please check the
    ULTRIX-DECNET conference on NAC.
    There is a pointer to a fix there.

Better yet, use dlogin only to get to the VMS system. Once there, use
   $ SET DISPLAY/CREATE/NODE=your_workstation
   $ CREATE/TERMINAL

This will create a >>VMS<< terminal window on your Ultrix workstation. Your
application will generally work as it would on a VMS workstation.

Be sure to use Customize Security on your workstation to enable the VMS
node to create windows.

This doesn't appear to work on our VMS 5.1 -- what do we need to upgrade?

Also, the NAC::ULTRIX-DECNET notesfile (in reply .2) doesn't seem to
exist. Is there a better pointer?

The reason I've asked is that I just "found" a PMAX and put a DECwindows
system on it. When I dlogin to VMS and try to use an editor, something
the editor does turns off arrow and other control keys. This doesn't
occur when I do the same from a Microvax-II based system. I suspect that
the two systems are running different versions of dlogin (or Ultrix or
something) and I stumbled over a bug somewhere.

Martin.

Upgrade to VMS V5.3.

Send mail to mibsbx::(matt)thomas for a pointer to the RISC 'dlogin'
fix. He is the author of that code.]

Are you running an older version of ULTRIX (ie 3.0)?

For V3.x VAX and RISC systems, you can grab a fixed version of dlogin from:

	MIPSBX::patches/V3.1/{vax,pmax}/dlogin

DECnet-ULTRIX questions should be asked in NAC::DECNET-ULTRIX.
