1677.0. "RISC decwindows server connection to VMS 5.3" by DHHL04::MALCOLM (malcolm melville) Mon Nov 06 1989 13:26

I have a DECstation 3100 running U-32 V3.1/UWS V2.1 that is also used as a
DECwindows server to a recently upgraded VMS cluster runnning 5.3. Some
apps seem to get fonts screwed up (FileView) and I often get
notes on mixed versions posted from apps such as notes (running on VMS).
Notes seem to be unable to print anymore and crashes if I try to print with
a print widget error.

Are there incompatability problems in this configuration?
Should I upgrade the DECstation and if so to what from where?
Are the problems down to the RISC interconnect or are there other
problems with VMS apps as well?

The apps with font problems are quite happy using VS2000s as displays
running 5.3.

The RISC X11 sever is different from the VAX counterparts.
That could be the cause of your problem.

Wait a minute...they are different servers, but they are designed to be
compatible. They should have all the same fonts, etc.

That does not mean that I know what your problem is. It sounds like QAR
material, though.

The problem is that you're using non-matching versions of DECwindows.

There was no real comittment for ULTRIX-VMS interoperability in the
DECwindows V1 release. This didn't happen until DECwindows V2.

You're using DECwindows V2 on VMS 5.3 and DECwindows V1 on UWS 2.1.
Upgrading your Pmax to use UWS 2.2 will correct the problems you're
seeing. However there is no SSB kit available for UWS 2.2 yet since
it has not reached SSB freeze yet. Once it is available you'll want
    to install it.
