1534.0. "2 problems: cannot allocate colormap entry and frequent server crashes" by OSLENG::DAGFRA (Dag Framstad @NWO, EIS/Engineering) Thu Oct 05 1989 08:22

Greetings!

I have two problems with my MicroVAX II. It is running ULTRIX V3.1 and
UWS 2.1 and I use the Motif window manager, mwm, and has a monochrome
monitor.

The first problem is that I get the following messages when I start some
programs (xload, xclock, xbiff, decwrite):

X Toolkit Warning: Cannot allocate colormap entry for "White"
X Toolkit Warning: Cannot allocate colormap entry for "Black"

The programs start but all I get inside the window is a black square.
This is very frustrating.

Can someone tell me what I do wrong.
If you need to take a look at my resource files they are located in my
top directory:

oslnix::/usr/users/dagfra                         (oslnix = 50.341)

The second problem has something with to with displaying VMS applications
on my display. When I go home from work I pause my workstation.
The next morning I usually want to read my new mail or open a
conference. What happens is that my DECwindows server core dumps
and I have to log in again. This usually happens 3 or 4 times a day,
and I all I run is DECwindows Mail (VMS), DECwindows Notes (VMS) and
dxterm (ULTRIX).

The MicroVAX has a VCB01 video controller, would it help to
install a VCB02 instead?

Does anybody know anything about this or have had similar experiances?

Regards

-Dag

1534.2nothing to do with MotifOSLENG::DAGFRADag Framstad @NWO, EIS/EngineeringWed Oct 11 1989 09:04167

    Why? This has nothing to do with Motif. I have tried with the dxwm
    window manager and with no .Xdefaults file, and the same keeps
    happening.

    The DECwindows server prints the following message in /usr/adm/X0msgs
    during a crash:

    Fatal server bug!

    And the following can be found in the core file (among other things):

    The corefile can be found at oslnix::/core.dump (the original name was
    core, I renamed it)

    I would appreciate it if someone has an idea as to what this can be.
