674.0. "# of supported greyscale color maps" by PHDVAX::LARSON () Tue Apr 25 1989 19:31

    Does the X standard support 1 greyscale color map per WINDOW?

    DOes DECWindows only support 1 greyscale color map per MONITOR?

    If so, are there plans for DECWidnows to support more than 1 map
    per monitor?

    Thanks,
    Bill.

Depends on whether your terminology is the same as X's. I would say the
answer is yes. With X11, you can have any number of "virtual" colormaps.
The hardware determines how many of them can be installed at once (that is,
if different windows want different colormaps, how many windows can have
the right colors simultaneously?). As to more than one colormap per
window, this doesn't make sense to me, so I am probably not understanding
the question. And finally, you should not that not all workstations must
support grayscale. For example, a GPX with a color monitor does not have
a gray-scale colormap. If you put a mono monitor on it (and tweak the
little logical to tell it what you did) it will have a grayscale colormap
but not color one.

674.2Why a seperate visual vs loading color map with shades of gray?STAR::BMATTHEWSWed Apr 26 1989 17:468
Although GPX doesn't provide a grayscale visual type if your monitor is color
you can of course load a colormap with shades of gray. I suppose there is no
real reason why we shouldn't provide multiple visual types for GPX with the
default being the one that matches your monitor but it doesn;t provide any
additional functionality over setting up the pseudo color map to be grayscale
or bitonal or 3/3/2 true color, right?

674.3What was that logical?SLOAN::HOMSun Apr 30 1989 01:555
    (the logical refered to in .1).

674.4Actually, you want to do the symbolDECWIN::FISHERBurns Fisher 381-1466, ZKO3-4/W23Mon May 01 1989 21:5910
Sorry, it is not a logical; it is a symbol (GLOBAL!). Put the
following line in a file called SYS$MANAGER:DECW$PRIVATE_SERVER_SETUP.COM:

DECW$COLOR == "FALSE"

That should do it. See the file *.template for examples and more
documentation.
